What powder(s) are you using for your .45-70 (I assume cast bullets)?


What powder(s) are you using for your .303 British?

If you are using cast in either caliber Accurate 5744. Excellent powder for .45-70 it started life out as a black powder substitute. If you want cast light mouse fart loads in either caliber that are accurate use Unique. Red Dot is a super light load in cast bullets in .303 that is accurate. I don’t know w/ confidence if you can use Red Dot or IMR4227 in a .45-70. In a modern rifle it would probably work safely but, do your own checking. Unique and 5744 are for to go in a Trapdoor.

The same powder in both calibers using jacketed bullets I don’t have an answer for you, sorry.

IMR4198 for 45-70

You best option in the time of this powder shortage is to go to the powder manufacturers website, pull up their data for each of those cartridges.


Make a list of the powders that they recommend, and then go shopping to see what you can find in stock.

It is likely that you will be forced to use an acceptable powder, and not an optimal powder, because of the current shortage of reloading components.

I shoot 34gr of IMR4198 and a 405gr HC bullet in my Uberti long-range High Wall replica. A few people I know at our club do more or less the same for their Sharps rifles.

I've done IMR4064 with acme coated 405grn and that's worked for my 45/70 needs. I typically try to replicate the old cavalry load though my guns can take the lever loads.
