So we finally bought a house and we move in mid October. I gotta take it easy on firearms purchase for a while so I figured I would get the one thing I feel is missing from my collection which is a scar 17. Anyone of you regret the purchase or would you do it all over again? I think fn raised the msrp to 3499.00 that’s a big distance from the 2500.00 2700.00 they were a year ago. Just trying to justify the price. I will be able feed it and get mags.

If you want a .308 semi battle rifle I can't think of anything better. I am pretty sure I've tried most, if not all, of the contenders. No downside that I can think of. Be happy. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

There is no downside to a Scar 17 except price and spare parts availability. I have some very nice M14 type rifles, including LRB's. I have G3's and DSA FAL's from when LMT made the receiver's for DSA. I love them all, they are all battle-proven .308 battle rifles. But if the Zombie Apocalypse ever comes I am grabbing my SCAR 17! You should also budget for the Geiselle trigger. It was impossible for me and my friends to get the accuracy the SCAR FN barrels are capable of until we upgraded to the Geiselle trigger. So there is another $300 or so. But if you want the best battle rifle currently out there, the SCAR is IT in my opinion. Cheers, i8mtm

If you can find one retail, let me know where. I've been looking for months. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Concur with both comments. I really like mine; it's the go-to rifle should this OFWG ever need to gear up for real. The Geiselle trigger can be found in the $200 range during Black Thursday sales. This means you can have the trigger ready to install before you find an available rifle. When you do, make sure you get the gold version. Besides being more accurate than black, it's fun identifying the different shades of tan and gold FN puts on these rifles. But seriously, get one. And don't forget to budget for optic$ that match the capabilitie$ of the rifle. "The Truth, when first uttered, is always considered heresy."

No worries! |
I absolutely love my SCAR 17. I payed a premium for mine being that I'm in CA and was getting it in before the AW deadline a few years back, but it was still less than 3k and I have ZERO regrets about it. Wonderful rifle, and I'd pay that again for it in a heartbeat. I went with a trigger from ShootingSight.com and recommend them as an alternative to the Geisselle and Timney triggers. I'd also recommend picking up one of their bore guides, makes cleaning a whole lot easier. The only downside is that I shoot 5.56 more often than 7.62, but variety is the spice of life after all. Not to mention there are a few companies that are working on conversion kits. So a new lower (the upper is the serialized portion of a SCAR), barrel and a few other things and I'll be able to shoot either one.

With bad intent |
If I had to do it all over again, I would have skipped buying every other semi-auto 308 that I did looking for somehting cheaper than the SCAR. I dont know that I would pay 3500 for stock SCAR. I paid 3600 and mine came with a complete factory lower, a complete Handl lower with Geissele trigger, Handl raill, PRS stock, dual charging handles and stack of mags. ________________________________

Great rifle, I love mine - to me it is the 308 rifle if you are looking for lightweight and easy to suppress / SBR. I paid just under $2600 for mine NIB back in '12. Not sure I would pay $3500 for a stock 17 either, since that gets you very close to a KAC SR25. But having my SCARs laid back with plenty of spares is something I'm glad I have done.

Yeah if I can find one for about 3,000.00 I’ll do it. 3500.00 is more then I think it’s worth

I had a dealer order one for me a few years ago. I think it was $2700 or so. Absolutely love it. I'm debating pouring more cash into it and getting it SBR'd. It will be suppressed as soon as my can gets out of jail. In my mind the only downside is the price. Both of the rifle and the ammo to feed it (compared to other calibers I shoot). Other than a trigger - I went with Geissele and have no regret there - and a good optic it doesn't really need anything else. I swapped out the selector levers for the Magpul ones just because I liked the feel, I swapped the side rails for PMM Mlok ones to make it a little slimmer and less cheese-grater. I use an HK hook and the loop in the stock to add a sling instead of spending on QD sockets. I changed the grip to an MOE+ that PMM prepped to fit because I have big hands and the A2 style is terrible in my opinion. And I added a VFG since it's kind of like using a bulky carbine AR setup and I think a VFG goes best with that kind of tighter foregrip.

I concur with all the above posters. My other .308s are HK91s and a Belgian FAL. The SCAR is the lightest most modular option. There is a reason they are so popular. I have no regrets buying mine.

Got one after waiting a year on various waiting lists. Love it, even for the cost. -ShneaSIG Oh, by the way, which one's "Pink?"

So I'll start this by stating that I've never owned a Scar 17. I have however sold plenty and know plenty of avid shooters who own them. I've shot both a 16 and 17 on numerous occasions. Until recently I could have purchased a 17 for dealer cost, but I did not. For me personally what the rifle is and does does not justify the price tag. I don't know your intention or what you want the rifle to do but my opinion is that there are plenty other battle type 308's that work just the same. They may be heavier, they may not have a side folding Ugg boot, I mean stock, but for what FNH is charging for these I think your money is better spent elsewhere. I know some Scar owners that think George S. Patton would now call the Scar 17 the greatest battle implement devised and I know others that have moved on. But at the end of the day it's your money and your God given right to buy whatever freedom dispensing tool you want. Even if it's made overseas by waffle eating, constitutional monarchy having socialists, that barely have a military. ----------------------------------------------- What's the sense in working hard if you never get to play?

Ok I'm open to the discussion. I can't think of a single thing, not one, an AR10 does better than a SCAR. I've several AR10's including SIG, DD, KA, etc. So what exactly other than price (which I agree is a huge plus for the AR10 and mags) would you point to. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

Now Serving 7.62 |
I really like my Scar 17S. I’ve also owned a couple of Scar 16S rifles as well and shot them suppressed mainly. I’ve also shot the full auto suppressed Scar Heavy. The 17 is where it’s at but not at $3000+ for stock 17’s. At that price I’d be looking at the B&T APC offering in 7.62. I no longer have the 16’s because, well, the 17 is all I really NEED and one that would be one I’d take bugging out for any reason. FN might price themselves out of the market which is as of now all demand and no supply.

I agree my LaRue OBR is a lot more accurate the my SCAR 17. Although it's a quite a bit heavier. That's the only plus I see for my 17.

The SCAR 17 is more of a battle rifle, although it can be quite accurate. I think most people who are disappointed in the 17 try to make it something it isn't (precision 308). For me the SCAR 17 shines with a barrel length of 13" and a suppressor, great for using 130gr SOST or 168gr OTM out to 400 - 600 yards when you want something with more barrier penetration than a 5.56. For me it puts the Wild Boars down with one hit nearly anywhere, whereas 5.56 shot placement can be critical - and considering the speed and agility of a wild pig (when you want to hit more than one), it helps. The folding stock also makes it more compact for transport and being an FN, it and the SCAR 16 scratched the FNC Para itch I have always had. It's certainly not for everyone (nor are most AR10s).
