For sbs, cost aside, nothing compares to a genesis 12.

In INS, the short barrels were a "cool kid" thing when they first rolled out. Agents on fugitive squads in Investigations, Deportation Officers on B&B/Fugitives or Consenting Alien assignments (protected high-value defectors whose countries might try to retake them), and BORTAC. They made their way into general circulation much later (in shortened form; BP had the 18" versions for ages).

Scattergun Tech sights would finish the look.

Hey, someone familiar with these! You know, it's amazing that all I've been able to find about these shotguns online is a single article someone uploaded to Facebook with a single picture of one of the 18" guns. I haven't found a single other picture in all my looking.

Add one more to that list: Anti Smuggling Unit. He said that technically, they were part of BORTAC, and had access to all the same toys, but he really liked the 14" Scattergun Tech they issued him. I got to shoot it a number of times, and was enamored with it, and perpetually eyeballing it when he brought it home. I built up something like the 18" guns at one point and gave it to him, but my ex brother-in-law somehow made off with it. Anyway, it's not the most practical setup these days, but I'm not sure I care. I'll get it parkerized and get those sights installed, and along with my 686, it'll be one of those pieces that brings back memories.

Thanks, smudge, for that awesome pic and for reviving my old thread. And for reminding me that I wanted to buy a large safety button for it.

As it goes, I did buy a 14” barrel and am currently storing it very separately from an 870 I’m going to convert. Paperwork has been submitted…. Cool

Oh, hell yes! Definitely post some pics when you get it put together. Big Grin

I have one of the original Witness Protection 870s made for the U.S. Marshals Service. I considered moving it from AOW to SBS via a Form 1 but did not want to engrave it. Now that is engraving is going away I’ll probably go ahead.

What's the current state of that? Is engraving officially no longer required?

It’s been proposed, and in the comment period. It’s not a done deal yet, it’s a “maybe” at this point. Para has a thread going with all the current info on it.

Link to that thread? I’ve been considering SBS-ing my 590 Shockwave and not having to engrave it would definitely push me towards getting it done.

Last day for comments is July 6. Then it’s just looking through the comments, and if they decide to approve, implementation. Given that it takes 2 months plus to get a Form 1 approved, a decision on the rule may be made by the time the Form 1 gets approved. In any case, it isn’t a NFA item until you make it, so you can always hold off on putting on the stock or shortening the barrel until it gets implemented. I’m not letting it stop me from submitting Form 1s now.

Dwill has it. File your stuff now, worry about engraving and all that later. I have five AR lowers in my safe I have neither engraved, nor assembled, and all of them have approved Form 1's since like, February.

I've been holding off engraving my SBR hoping it won't be necessary. I have the parts for the upper but haven't started putting it together yet. Assuming the engraving requirement is indeed removed, my concern is: would an SBR that was approved before the change but not built until after the change, still be subject to the requirement because of the earlier approval? Put another way, is it considered an SBR when it's approved, or when it's all built?

Just have them de-list it and tell them it was never converted to an SBR. Then re-file and wait two or three months.

It’s not actually an NFA item until it’s actually built. Some people don’t build right away, and some people end up never actually building it and could get their $200 refunded (in the old days Wink Like P220 Smudge, I’ve got an approved Form 1 that I’ve been holding off on putting a stock on, as well as two more submissions currently in process that I’ll wait on putting stocks on until the rule gets changed, if necessary.
