I've been busy, as well as distracted by other projects.

Time to put the ASA side charger together.

I have a Larue MBT just sitting here, and a lower that I bought after Newtown.

It'll be a scoped .223, and I called White Oak to ask if they'd barrel it, the answer is yes.

I found a site that offers good looking American Walnut furniture. I'll be getting the buttstock and pistol grip for sure.

As far as the forend, I haven't quite decided what I'll do, I may actually just make my own pieces, and choose some railed handguard to add them too. I've got some time to think on it.

It'll be a scope and bipod affair.

Sounds really nice, Arc. Looking forward to seeing some pics when you get done, or even through the process.

I have a block of Rock Maple I haven't found anything to do with. It might become some "grip panels."

So far, it looks like the slotted handguard from JP is the strongest contender. Maybe their lighter weight one. I'd probably make panels for the bottom and a handstop.

My thought, actually, with the wood on the handguard, is for it to mimic the feel of the WA2000.

So, it's going to look weird, but what I may end up doing is putting a well massaged 2x4 under an AR forend.

Is that the one that takes a 1-3/8" wrench to install the barrel nut, then attach the tube to the nut? ... If so, I've got one on my 6.5 Creedmoor, it's very nice and their stuff is first rate, but I've never abused it so I can't attest to their durability, but it's never come loose.
I did have a heck of a time finding a wrench ... In another life I turned wrenches on imports, mostly A/C repair but I didn't have anything that fit. A new Snap-On was around $100 IIRC but I was getting tired of buying tools for a 1-time use. I could have rented one from NAPA for $35 but I decided to try Walmart and other local stores ... Finally found one at Menards Lumber for less than $20 ... It wasn't fancy but it did what I needed it for.

If you really want something you'll find a way ...
... if you don't you'll find an excuse.

I'm really not a "kid" anymore ... but I haven't grown up yet either Wink

I need to get a price from White Oak, that'll tell me how long to save up. Then I need to save up for the glass. I still need to get glass for the 10/22. The scope on that was temporary just to get shooting.

Wood stocks should be here shortly, and I ordered some bits from Brownells I'd swear I had. Like the trigger guard. I'll find it when the new one arrives.

Silly me, I'll buy the triangular handguard and a 20" iron sights upper to use with this.

I always like side chargers.
While I generally wouldn't like wood stocks on a weapon like that but it does look pretty good albeit I might have Cerakoted the metal parts.
FWIW, my WOA 20" SDM is a tac shooter.
Interesting project.

IIRC, you have a commonwealth pattern L1A1. Rifles don't have to be black from head to toe!

That one slipped from my grasp unfortunately. That was a nice BSA kit.

Sorry to hear that, Arc. This build reminds me of looking at L1s and Aussie SLRs with wood furniture.

Any plans for the muzzle, birdcage or three slot?

I'll prolly pick up a Brownells retro upper, or whatever I can find, for the wood handguard action. Then prolly buy this guys triangular.

Still going to do the scoped flap top ~24" first.

Oh man that's nice.

That wood would look great on my Spike's pirate lower.

I'm thinking I want to paint the upper and lower a gray or stainless color.

Thanks for the link.
