Best for what? That is plenty of budget to get one or two.
I would look at Noveske myself.
LMT would also be a good option at the top end.
FN is also another good option.

A Colt 6933 complete upper is good also. I do not know about current production though.

I just bought a Sons of Liberty EX03 in 11.5. I like it.

Very solid reputation, especially known for “properly” gassing their guns.

I recently bought a Griffin 11.5” upper that I like very much. Came with sights, their SN-ACH gas busting charging handle, and their gas pocket BCG. Very well built and no gas to the face when suppressed.

If you're going 11.5" it's gotta be a Colt Model 733 as seen in the movie Heat.

Not really sure there are many uses for an 11.5” AR.
All I can think of; running suppressed, shooting under 100 yards, and interior maneuverability.


Dwill104 that Griffin looks nice and seems like quite the nice price with sights and gas mitigating BCG and charging handle included

11.5 is useful well past "under 100 yards". It doesn't give up that much velocity/effective range over the standard 14.5" or 16" carbine length.

About 10% lower muzzle velocity. Still useful out to several hundred yards.

11.5 and 12.5 are widely considered the "Goldilocks" length for a more compact AR, especially if using a suppressor, since velocity doesn't start to drop off all that drastically until you get shorter than 11.5.


Geissele, Daniel Defense, and Noveske are where I would start looking in the $1k-$1.5k range. Or if you're wanting a bit under $1k, then BCM.

Here is a Daniel Defense DD4 MK18 RISIII 10.3” for $1600 (after adding to cart). Sell the lower, if you don’t want it, and still come out ahead.

DD, BCM or Geissele. Geissele has a LE discount and has 11.5 USASOC URGI clones in stock right now for $14xx and some change.

(Well, they were in stock this morning when I got the email . After being out of stock for months, they are gone again)

Geissele URGI or Super Duty. My 11.5" URGI is my favorite of the various AR's I've owned. Nothing else comes out to play anymore and it's what started me thinning the herd - I just didn't see a reason to keep everything else, including a Colt 6933 and 733. Sure, retro vibes and watching Heat with it propped up against the couch, but in terms of raw utility? URGI.

My experience with various length ARs comes from multi-rifle and rifle/pistol events. Two buddies use 11.5" ARs to reduce overall system weight, and to increase mobility around barriers/buildings/woods. I've been in their squads during matches, using my 16" or 18" ARs.

There's a definite weight and mobility advantage to the 11.5" barrels, especially when one is already carrying a substantial load. Out to 200-ish yards there's really no performance differences on steel and other reactive targets. Starting around 250 yards we saw the advantages of my longer barrels. Noticeably more energy on targets -- steel plates swung a lot more, dirt splash was quite a bit higher. Bullet drift from crosswinds was less. Flatter trajectory produced higher hit rates on small targets of uncertain distances.

Around 400 yards the 16-18 inch barrels really showed their advantages, with noticeably higher hit rates on 2-3 MOA targets. In variable and higher winds, the shorter ARs sometimes took multiple shots to engage torso-sized targets. In contrast, my longer barrels were generally 1 shot, or 1 shot & 1 correction.

But back to the original concept -- an 11.5" AR is very capable to 200, even 300 yards. And in the right hands, even farther.

Yeah, I found it a lot easier than I thought it would be to consistently put rounds with my 11.5 on a man-sized steel at 300 yards with an Eotech, no magnifier. It's more capable than I would've guessed.

LMT New Zealand police rifle upper. Not the reference rifle. They were a contract overrun I have seen some lnib for 1k. May take some digging to find one

Daniel defense also had a contract overrun of 11.5 for unnamed foreign buyer. Have seen for 800ish new. Including BCG and a set DD iron sights.

I have a 6933 upper easy to find for $700 NIB and vintage bushmaster fixed carry 11.5 for my xm177 clone.

I have a 13.7 SOLGW as well.

What I really want is a 12.5 Kino upper from BCM.

I’m an iron sights guy especially on short rifles. I’m very confident I can hit the 8” steel plate at 125 yards at my gun club with open sights. I don’t use my shorty AR for hunting. My 20” has a scope.
