x0225095Good deal or not on this Savage 110...?
So...starting this out with the old refrain that I don’t really NEED a new rifle but I’ve run across a situation.
Son of a friend has this for sale....
Savage 110
Wood stock
16 boxes of 30.06
Hard case
3x9 Tasco scope
Inexpensive sling
Inexpensive Cartridge belt on the stock
$500.00
The only 30.06 I own is a Garand.
All my other centerfires are either AR , lever action or some bolts in the 6.5 family (Swede, Creed and Grendel).
Rifle ‘looks” pretty clean....reportedly has about 250 rounds through it.
Based on Ammo costs alone the price of $500 seems very fair. The scope maybe serviceable and I don’t care about the synthetic sling and cartridge belt on the stock. That can easily be changed/removed.
I have thoughts of adding a .30 caliber bolt to the fold in the future and while I would probably first consider Weatherby Vanguard, Remington, Tikka, etc in that low-mid price point area but this opportunity has presented itself now.
What say you guys?

huskerlrrpFor what it's worth, I bought a Stainless short action Model 16 "Trophy Hunter combo" new in 308 Win for ~$525 so I could have the action (sold the barrel for ~$80 and the scope for ~$120). I believe it was a Nikon 3x9 scope. I don't know if I could give the plastic stock away, so I can imagine the wood stock you are being offered as premium. The ammo is probably the real value in the deal if it's quality stuff. The price doesn't seem out of line in my opinion.

x0225095.....not sure if all the Ammo is the same but some of it at least is Remington Core-Lokt...pretty solid field ammo.

30-06 Core Lokt is about $0.90 a round. So 16 boxes of it is about $288, before taxes.
That makes it a pretty good deal if you have a use for that much 30-06 ammo.
However, I also see a Savage 110 with a cheap Remington scope and 40-50 rounds of ammo on a local classified ad for $340. So it's also not a screaming, unheard of type of deal, either.

FundmanEven it is just cheap FMJ the ammo is worth $200. The Tasco is worth nothing. So you would be paying $300 for a wood stock 110. That is a good deal if you actually want a 30-06 bolt action. Not worth it if you really don't want a bolt action but are just doing because it fell into your lap.

x0225095Yeah.....thank guys.
Fundman, your comment is insightful. This one I just falling lap...it wouldn’t be my choice if I shopped and most of the value seems to lie with the ammo.
I do want a 30.06 in the future but I think I’ll pass this one up.
