I sent all my paperwork in 2-3 weeks ago. double checked the checklist and SHOULD be good to go. I'm not concerned with how fast the order is completed, however, do you normally get confirmation of an order received? More than anything I just want to make sure the order arrived as I foolishly didn't send with delivery confirmation. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

What timing! I mailed in all my paperwork (yes, a PITA) and ordered some .30 carbine FMJ on Jan 31, it's on the FedEx truck to be delivered today. It's my very first order from CMP. CMP is not even close to the efficiency of Amazon, SG, Brownells, etc. I received ZERO about the order, not when they charged me, not when they shipped it. They do not reply to voice mails. I only knew it was on the way when I got the usual email from FedEx. I did get an email from CMP saying I forgot to include the form 2A, which their instructions said was not required. I got the 2A notarized and sent it in. FedEx told me they ship adult signature required, so I'm patiently waiting. No big deal as I'm retired. This was an ammo shipment, maybe the CMP system is more efficient for rifles or gear. Otto, check your mail.

Yes, you should get a generic email when they start processing your rifle order. (Or at least that's how it worked, up to my last CMP order a few years back.) Lovingly referred to on the CMP Forum as the DBU email: "Don't Bug Us" Basically it'll state that your rifle order has been received, but it'll be a little bit before it's processed and shipped, so please don't bother them with unnecessary inquiries about your order status. There should then be another email or two as it progresses through processing/fulfillment/shipping. Understand that this can take weeks/months, depending on order volume. They're not a huge, high tech retail corporation. Certainly not Amazon, or even Brownells/SG. They're not a rifle/ammo business; they're a nonprofit focused on marksmanship and gun safety training. Rifle and ammo sales are a secondary aspect of their operation, and the sales division is run on a shoestring budget with a very small staff supplemented by volunteers. That's partly what helps keep the CMP's prices down. You want Amazon level instant communication and rapid fulfillment? Would you be willing to pay 3x/4x/etc. in order to get it? Or would you rather just exercise some patience, like the good old days, while enjoying the good old days pricing too. Historically speaking, 4-5 week turnaround on a CMP order is super fast. Be thankful, Sigmund.

Thanks Rogue, and no, I'm not in any rush to receive the rifle, but at this time would it be poor form to reach out and just make sure they at least received my paperwork? 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Thanks Sigmund, that's kind of what I was expecting, to get tracking information 90 days after sending in my paperwork, but having not put a delivery confirmation on it I started second guessing whether or not it ever arrived. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Yes. I just checked and based on the latest posts on the CMP Forum timeline thread, it's currently taking 5 to 6 weeks between orders arriving at the CMP and DBU emails being received. Give it another month or so. Patience, grasshopper... This is old school mail ordering, not Amazon Prime next day delivery instant gratification.

Fair enough. Hopefully I'm on mids so I can wake up to the email! Shit is like Christmas some times. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

It takes forever to hear anything back. Usually at least a month. Then if you missed anything, you have to fix it, and wait some more. Even if you got everything right, it still may be a month or two between your DBU email, and the actual ship date of the rifle. It's like Christmas when you get that shipment notification, though! They also send you the rifles serial # when they ship it, which of course prompts a bunch of research before you even have the gun in hand, lol. My first order from them must have been well-timed, because it was only about two weeks between placing the order and getting the rifle. The other two took 4-5 months, and it got a little hairy in there because we were gone on family vacation during that time and I was kinda scared they'd ship it and then UPS would send it back because no ody was home to sign for it.... thankfully it all worked out and the gun didn't ship until after we got back.

If you are willing to travel to CMP store, then you can bypass all this waiting game. I have only been to the one in Alabama, the selection was great. You pick the rifle you like, complete the required paperwork and you take possession of the rifle the same day. The CMP range was great, too. You can test your rifle right there.

My buddy and I went to the CMP North store in Ohio about 7 years ago, before I got my mail order guns. It's about a 3.5 hour drive, we were both night shifters at the time, and we got up at 4:30 am to be there when it opened. It was a bit of a hardship, lol. I was sorely disappointed in the selection in the store. This was back when you could get one of the lower-grade rifles for $480 or $580 IIRC, so I was hoping to find something of that type. They had a total of 3 rifles in those grades, and they were all horrible. Metal was rusted and badly pitted. You couldn't read the rollmarks, and the stocks were some kind of aftermarket red painted garbage. The next cheapest were some kind of special service grade for over $900-$1050, and then there was a whole rack of M1 snipers for big $$$$. The store experience almost soured me on the CMP entirely, but a couple of years later I decided to place an order for a Special Rack Grade for $650. The rifle I got was excellent, with a really nice CMP Walnut stock. A year or so later I ordered a service grade for $750, with similar results. My son's rack grade was a little rougher, but still worlds better than anything I saw in the store in that category. I imagine going to the store is a hit or miss thing. If you get lucky and they have a good variety in stock it's worth it, but you also risk putting in a bunch of time and effort just to have the experience that I did.

That was my hesitation in driving the 6 hours to Ohio on a couple days off for me. The fact that rifle sales have to go to AL lead me to believe the best inventory was in AL. I couldn't confirm the selection at the OH store. The photos online could be from any time frame. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Last time I went to Cmp in Alabama was in January 2023, the selection was very good. They even had one rifle painted in white, some sort of a ceremonial rifle as I was explained. However, when I was there, two years prior to it, this election was not as good. It is hit or miss. I mainly go there for the range, though. My drive is about 11 hours each way, living in Illinois. I also try to incorporate some sort of a rifle class there, usually from Steyr.
