Oat’s thread about his AK work reminded me I need to get my 870 out to Meridian Ordnance to be refinished. Years back it got the Magpul treatment and some parts from Scattergun technologies. But that was all stuff I could do myself. Figure if I am going to have him refinish it may as well do some sights or a red dot maybe. Beads Rifle sights Ghost ring sights (even one with tritium) I've got various examples with all three. For home defense shotgun purposes, it's tough to beat the simple bead. Just as fast or faster than ghost rings or especially rifle sights, and you don't need the precision of the fancier sights on a HD shotgun. (A red dot might be even better, but come to think of it, I've actually never tried a red dot on a shotgun before...) Having a quality light that's easy and intuitive to use is more important than what particular style of sight you have anyway. | |||

I'm a fully committed red dot and light guy on anything I own that is 'serious'. HD for me = aimpoint and surefire. It really doesn't matter what platform that's what it gets from pistol to rifle to shotgun. [drift] we put trijicon ACOG sights on Remington 870s with a 14” barrel. Had to qualify with slugs and buckshot. The things couldn’t stay sighted in due to the recoil. Really leaning towards keeping it simple like this. A lot of the reviews on Amazon say the illumination is very poor. How do you feel it compares with other night sights? I have found an XS sight as well but it appears you just epoxy it to the existing bead. Not really digging that idea. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I don't know how many rounds I've done but its in the thousands with an aimpoint. Not an issue.I'm stunned that an acog had issues and I might suspect the mounts but I'm not a regualar Acog guy so I don't know. It’s really big and bright in the dark bedroom! It is as bright as the rear sight (two lamps) on my Glock on the nightstand. It throws green light on the wall as it’s leaning in the corner....maybe those guys got an old one- but mine is impressive. Mine screwed into the standard mossberg threads, but I JB welded it as there was a gap under the sight (had to clock it so the sight could be seen   You can see a thin line of gray (JB weld) under the sight, in the pics "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. I've got an RMR on a Benelli M4 and a Vortex SPARC on a 930 SPX. I have a couple others that could take an optic but have not pursued it. | |||

I used the same Meprolight front bead as MikeinNC used, that was for the Mossbergs. On the 2 Rem 870’s I have the XS pedestal bead. Both glow nice in low light. | |||

Ghost ring sights on a shotgun for me. Blacked out rear with a tritium front. Simple yet accurate. I get the purpose of just a bead for HD, but my shotgun doesn't really pull HD duty. It more or less gets taken up to camp for the occasional rabid animal, or possibility of bear. So it serves that role but also acts as a long gun there if needed. Current shotgun for that setup is a benelli m1 sbs. I used to have an 870 that was set up similar, and was very happy with the scattergun tech sights. We still have 870s at work with those sights and really don't use them besides qualification. If I was setting up an 870 today, it'd be those sights, a shotgun card on the side, and a light for HD. | |||

My 870 has just the tiny little factory bead that's really hard to see, especially in dim light. I'm going to replace it at some point with either a ghost ring setup or just a bigger/taller front bead, probably with tritium on whichever it is. I have an 18" rifle sighted barrel on an 1100 that I bought from a guy who used to shoot IPSC with it, but I've found it to be slower to get lined up than the simple bead. It's great for shooting slugs at distance, but for short range stuff, not so much.This message has been edited. Last edited by: Expert308, | |||

all you ghost ring, bead dot guys need to get out and try running in crappy light and gun provided illumination and then compare that to running it with a decent red dot. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.” | |||

I have a bayonet on my HD shotgun, Stick 'em with the pointy end and you can't miss no matter what load you have in the chamber! In all seriousness, I do have a 590a1, but it is not my first choice for HD do to the overall length. It has the front bead for a sight. I keep it with my other replicas of my USMC issued arms. I would not hesitate to get an 18 inch version of it for HD, with a Surefire forend and keeping the bead sight. I'm not a fan of ghost rings personally, and for HD distances, a red dot is not needed IMO. I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself. | |||

*shrug* Considering any of my shotguns would be, like, #11 on my list of options to grab for home defense, I'm not in a huge rush to worry about it. But I have no doubt that red dots are likely better than iron sights, as with rifles. | |||
