The CMP just announced that they will begin selling surplus US military M14 rifles, beginning in late 2026/early 2027.

The rifles will be "modified to be permanently and irreversibly semi-automatic", though no details are provided as to what that will involve.

Prices are also yet to be announced. (My SWAG would be $1200-$1500ish, depending on how much work is entailed in the modifications, based on their current Garand and 1911 pricing.)

As much as I admire the 14 rifle, I will forever love the Garand even more. It's just 10 pounds of love my rifle cradle desires more. Now, a 14 built for the National Matches with a medium heavy stock, in the beautiful reddish stain just melts the butter.

I concur. While the M14 is a fine rifle, it doesn't quite speak to me like the M1 Garand does.

I'm glad I bought a couple Garands and a couple M1 Carbines back when the CMP's prices were more reasonable and rifle and ammo availability was good.

I don't think I'll be picking up a M14, though. I have a commercial M1A, and honestly it doesn't see as much use as many of my other .308 rifles and battle rifles.

Now I am curious, and not that anyone would hear objections from me, but I thought, “Once a machine gun, always a machine gun”—? Does that mean that the rationality fairy has dropped a speck of logic pixie dust on someone, somewhere? (Or am I just wrong?)

Either that, or they're actually planning to replace all the receivers...

I mean, that's certainly one way to render them "permanently and irreversible semi-automatic", but I doubt it would be worth it for them unless they were planning to charge an exorbinant amount, and it would also defeat much of the purpose of buying one of these for many collectors which would further deflate sales. The rifles would then effectively just be USGI parts kits on commercial semiauto receivers.

Interesting news, I'll stay tuned. My older brother may be interested in one. That's what the Marines trained him on back when.

If these are priced at $4k, they will be lucky to sell more than a few dozen of them.

KAC SR25 sell out for more than $4k, and they aren’t collectable USGI military rifles. I am of course talking about pricing with original receivers.

“Once a machine gun, always a machine gun” is an ATF rule, not a law. The ATF has issued waivers in the past and it looks like that is going to be what happens here.

I also noticed that the CMP announcement says they are “singularly authorized” to modify the rifles, so that would seem to indicate it was an exemption to the ATF rule.

I want one. If the price is right.

Yep, M14 guys have been dumping serious money into making "as USGI as possible" clones for decades. I briefly owned a Polytech that was all TRW and Winchester parts that a friend of mine put together. The only non-USGI part was the receiver, and it was a Polytech precisely because at the time, that was the closest thing there was to USGI, as it was forged and high on the Rockwell scale vs the Springfields that were cast. I want to say he was well north of two grand into it, and somewhere around three, and those are early 2000's prices. Same friend told me about this yesterday morning at 7am, saying he'd already renewed his GCA membership and would be buying at least one, two if possible the minute they were available.

Will I buy one? I dunno. I really like the Garand better, and I owned enough of them to pick my favorite and let the others walk. Had a USGI M14 clone in the Polytech and I think I put one magazine through it and was over it. For a collector's piece, it would fit nicely in the safe alongside the other rotating bolt rifles, but I'm mostly over stuffing the safe with collectible shit that I never shoot. I think I may have just talked myself out of it.

Would be interesting to see if they can somehow expand this to M2 and M3 carbines. On auction, examples of either of those would net a good chunk of change.

I will buy one. And even if they're $4k, they will all sell. Hopefully it will be in the $3K range or lower.
