Check out this pic of the M1 and the M1a/M14 posted by Rogue { "posted October 20, 2017 02:09 PM" }. https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...750030234#1750030234 Now, Rogue's pic is a good one demonstrating what kinda bothers me. Check out the buckles on the slings. I do believe his pic here has these set up properly as per "regulations". And therein lies the problem. Check those things out. My wife is no gun crank but when I called her over to the gogglebox and asked what was wrong with this picture, she, as a horsewoman, KNEW immediately what it WAS. I don’t know. Right or wrong, I wouldn’t have installed the lever buckle that way. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." L.Tolstoy "A government is just a body of people, usually, notably, ungoverned." Shepherd Book

I always configure the locking adjustment tab (sorry, no idea of its official name) so that the free end of the sling is on the outside where it can be grasped easily and not on the side toward the weapon. konata88 beat me to it. Added: In reviewing my May 1965 copy of FM23-8, U.S. Rifle 7.62mm, M14 and M14E2, most (but not all) of the illustrations show the locking buckle installed so that the free end of the sling is—for some reason—on the inside toward the rifle. ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. Smart guys we have here!! We horsemen always apply the "smooth against the horse" adage. Evidently, Uncle forgot the "horse" {infantryman} pretty darn fast after the last mount went to the glue factory. Good catch, guys!! I have always reversed the buckle on similar slings. ********************** 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. That sling has many more uses than just to sling the rifle. In some of those configurations like the loop sling and the hasty sling for shooting stabilization, you twist the strap and get the smooth part facing skin. I see your point though. Henryrifle

True, but none of that precludes the use of a sling that digs a hole in your shoulder. ********************** 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Doing what I want, When I want, If I want! |
Sorry to disappoint folks, but having the release towards the rifle is correct. Go look at pics of the canvas slings from WWII. I believe it is so you don’t snag it on something and inadvertently undo the sling. ******************************************** "On the other side of fear you will always find freedom"

Yes. The slings are set up correctly, but they are a really stupid design, that's all. I never thought about the reason being a concern to avoid unintentional loosening, but that makes sense, tho in using these slings I've never had one come apart when set up "wrong". I'm not really all that upset about it, either, since as you say, it's a simple turnaround and all's well. Thus I have altered the title. I just have always found the design to be a marvel of mis-engineering. ********************** 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. I do the same with a leather sling, after years of using one in Competitions, I mount leather slings different than what was instructed back in the day https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/
