Now, Rogue's pic is a good one demonstrating what kinda bothers me.

Check out the buckles on the slings. I do believe his pic here has these set up properly as per "regulations". And therein lies the problem.

Check those things out.

My wife is no gun crank but when I called her over to the gogglebox and asked what was wrong with this picture, she, as a horsewoman, KNEW immediately what it WAS.

I don’t know. Right or wrong, I wouldn’t have installed the lever buckle that way.

I always configure the locking adjustment tab (sorry, no idea of its official name) so that the free end of the sling is on the outside where it can be grasped easily and not on the side toward the weapon.

Added: In reviewing my May 1965 copy of FM23-8, U.S. Rifle 7.62mm, M14 and M14E2, most (but not all) of the illustrations show the locking buckle installed so that the free end of the sling is—for some reason—on the inside toward the rifle.

Tag end on the outside. As above.

I have always reversed the buckle on similar slings.

That sling has many more uses than just to sling the rifle. In some of those configurations like the loop sling and the hasty sling for shooting stabilization, you twist the strap and get the smooth part facing skin.

True, but none of that precludes the use of a sling that digs a hole in your shoulder.

Sorry to disappoint folks, but having the release towards the rifle is correct. Go look at pics of the canvas slings from WWII. I believe it is so you don’t snag it on something and inadvertently undo the sling.

Yes.

The slings are set up correctly, but they are a really stupid design, that's all. I never thought about the reason being a concern to avoid unintentional loosening, but that makes sense, tho in using these slings I've never had one come apart when set up "wrong".

I'm not really all that upset about it, either, since as you say, it's a simple turnaround and all's well. Thus I have altered the title.



I just have always found the design to be a marvel of mis-engineering.

I do the same with a leather sling,

after years of using one in Competitions, I mount leather slings different than what was instructed back in the day
