The vast majority of us build or purchase guns for what may or may not happen. I am definitely guilty of this. I recently built a lightweight AR15 with a low power optic to use as my new home defense gun / run and gun do it all gun. It shoots well, but I struggled to get those nice groups with the low powered optic. Last night, I realized I am kidding myself. I am never going to be running and gunning and almost all of my rifle shooting is from a bench Big Grin. The exception is when I am hunting.

Last night I reconfigured my gun to how I will actually use it the most and what will bring me better satisfaction. I need another dedicated gun sitting in the safe like I need a hole in the head. My SBR 300 BLK fills the role of a self defense gun just fine. This little light weight will serve as my mid range gun should I ever need it in my subdivision….lol. The 3x on the low end along with the nuclear bright dot in the center of the reticle also makes it quite useful at closer ranges as well.

The new configuration with Leupold VXR Patrol 3-9. The Leupold replaced a fixed 3x Primary Arms Microprism.

Good thinking, IMO.
And a beautiful gun, BTW. Smile

I have many different guns configured and tweaked to fill different roles just so, but I also realize that if the Martians land and start exterminating everyone in sight, I’ll have to choose only one and make do with it as well as I can for every purpose. And even then, how long will it take to make the decision? Hick’s law and all that. Wink

I think we all feel the way you do, preparing for something that hopefully will never take place. I have a couple guns I built for the same purpose.

Very nice looking rifle, that green looks really sharp. I love the anodizing colors from Aero. A friend of mine just built one in FDE and I am impressed with the overall quality. I have to say,it's threads like this that make me break out the credit card.

That's a nice looking rifle.

I only have two AR15's and they seem to get reconfigured from time to time.
On my 14.7" I'll use an optic for a bit then try something else.
I started with a red dot and am now back to using one with a taller mount and that is working out better for me for this rifle.
In reality this rifle has a 250 yd working distance at the extreme end and a red dot works fine for that.
The red dot is on a QD mount and I have a scope that's in a QD mount not being used so I have that option.

I used to compete in Service Rifle or as some called it High Power,

then a change in employment caused me to not compete as much as I used to,

now, self employed , I am free enough to shoot more than I used to,

however, I am outdated, re the upper etc,

so, I came to a realization that I needed to upgrade my equipment to be at least somewhat competitive,

granted most of this is related to me being almost 60 and my change in eyesight vs 20 yrs ago,

Does that pretty much sum it up? Confused

If that is your understanding of my post then run with it Sir. No one else seems confused about it.

I moved things around on my first few trying to be “realistic”.
Then just gave in to my inner Jarhead & bought another safe for the foolishness! Razz

I get confused by many posts on this forum, but this is not one of them.
Its point is perfectly clear to me.

Changing a sight on a rifle or setting a rifle up with a particular optic as it’s put together has a significant effect on what role(s) it serves best. I can’t read the mind of usncorpsman and therefore his thinking may not be the same as mine, but I have changed or carefully chosen a rifle’s optic many times for that reason.

ETA found the answer to my question online.

That is indeed an impressive collection. Hope you bought a big safe for all those.

Nice setup! Did you like the 3x prism? I’m finally getting old and realize I may need a little help in the magnification department..

I think many of us here, being that this is a firearms forum, often try to have a gun to cover every possible situation whether that could really happen or not. One thing I have learned in 15 years in the military, many of those years serving with maneuver units, is to keep it simple. We get an M4, mags and an ACOG. I don't know the specs on that ACOG, I just know if I maintain it and qualify with it, I trust my life to it.

That being said, I think I do need a .308 Big Grin

usncorpsman, is your Aero set anodized or Cerakote? I think Aero offers both.

What was click bait about it? There is discussion going on, not a link to some other BS crap which is the definition of click bait.

Hello Sir,

The entire rifle is anodized green. The rail is just OD anodized. The ranger green rail would have been too much in my opinion.

Exactly. Click bait is also something that’s totally misleading like, “Supreme Court ruling overturns the latest antigun effort,” when in fact it’s about a city ordinance banning fireworks. There’s one progun attorney who does that all the time with his videos, and is the reason I’ve completely given up watching his.

The title here didn’t spell out what the post was about, but if that’s click bait, that would apply to countless titles here. “P220,” “A kinda cool gun,” “320 trigger,” are just a few that I found with a couple of minutes’ review. The difference about this thread and those others is that I often don’t open threads with uninformative titles, but made an exception because I’ve found that if it’s by usncorpsman, it’s probably worth my time.

Well, Duh!
We all know that 5.56 is for stuff "right here".

Get that .308 because stuff happens "over there"!
(We'll talk later about .338, 300WinMag for the stuff that's going on way over there!

Wink
