Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
**EDIT** Instead of spamming you with LW videos, I figured I'd rename this thread. Here's the video. Ever since the scamdemic, LW hasn't imported any M14 barrels from Germany. As a result, they decided to make them in-house. I advised them through the process by sending them a front half of a real M14 receiver, a flash suppressor, a gas cylinder, gas lock and gas plug with detailed instructions on how everything was supposed to fit. They were supposed to have me a barrel to test in December but just got one to me 2 weeks ago. I installed the barrel last night and tested it at the range today. I'll have a full video in the next few days, but the CEO of LW told me he wanted a velocity report, as the new rifling they have was supposed to give better results. Well, he was right! Get a load of these numbers. These velocities are out of a 22" M14 heavy barrel. With M118LR (175 grain stuff from 2006) I got an average velocity of 2703 FPS with a high of 2729 FPS and a low of 2689 FPS for 5 rounds. The same box of ammo yielded 2661 FPS out of a conventional 4-groove Lothar-Walther barrel with a high of 2687 FPS and a low of 2641 FPS. Out of a Satern Liberty 5R barrel, the same box of ammo yielded an average of 2691 FPS with a high of 2702 FPS and a low of 2678 FPS. So in summary, the new rifling produced velocities 42 FPS faster than conventional 4-groove rifling. Just thought some of you might be curious. Tony. This message has been edited. Tony, The velocity gain of the new LW barrrel is substantial, IMHO. Worth considering if you are looking to re-tube your rifle. Way to go LW! I've got the older barrel on "Reacher" and it's been solid, to say the least. Wes

Yes, for sure. I just ran the numbers through JBM Ballistics and it says that the 175 grain SMK at 2700FPS at the muzzle will be supersonic out to at least 1,100 yards and goes trans-sonic around 1,150 yards. And that's not even considering that there's better bullets with better BC's. Tony. Owner, TonyBen, LLC, Type-07 FFL www.tonybenm14.com (Site under construction). e-mail: tonyben@tonybenm14.com

I pulled up JBM and entered DA of 2000 feet, which results in essentially the same figures. Mach 1.0 is right around 1100 yards. Everything beyond 1100 yards is subsonic. Transonic speeds are generally considered to begin at Mach 1.2 and it's at this velocity a bullet's ability to fly effectively become in question. Mach 1.2 in this instance is predicted to occur at 910 yards.

Sooo, what is this 'new rifling' you speak of? ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! Sigless in Indiana |
This is a wild ass guess on my part, but I'm guessing gain twist. I have a Larue Stealth barrel on my 223 precision gas gun and I get eye popping velocity for that barrel length with a max load of Varget and Sierra 69gr BTHP. 2950 FPS. And this is using Applied Ballistics CDM ballistic coefficient data and observed drop out to 800 yards to true up the velocity, not using a chronograph. Some barrels are indeed faster than others. Benny, if that barrel is brand new, I expect it will speed up after 100-200 rounds.

I'm checking to see what I can say about the rifling. They haven't told me much at all. I only know the acronym they use for the rifling but a Google search yields nothing. Apparently, this is the first gas-gun barrel made and tested with this rifling. I was told that they have seen accuracy improvements with higher velocities in bolt guns that have been tested. Yes, Indiana, this is a new barrel. I chambered it myself and gave it a good chamber and throat polishing before testing. I'll be monitoring velocities and testing accuracy in the coming weeks. I'll let you guys know more as I am told what I'm allowed to share. Tony. This message has been edited. A video will be forthcoming, but I just got word today from LW that I can divulge at least the acronym they're using. They call it ICR rifling. He hasn't told me what it stands for, but that's what they've named the rifling. He said we'll have a discussion about it soon. Tony.
