I have just learned that Mrs. A. will be surprising me with a 10/22 for Christmas. Where, and of what vintage, should I be looking for additional magazines?

Personally, I’ve always used Ruger factory mags. The 10-rounders, and the higher capacity BX-15 and BX-25 banana mags.

+100% agree

I actually shoot two SwitchBolt rimfire rifles (Optic and Iron sights but never both at the same time) in Steel Challenge matches that utilizes the 10/22 mags and I have 48 units of the BX-1 Ruger 10 round rotary mags that I use. IMO the Ruger OEM rotary mags are the most reliable (at least in my two rifles). This allow me to load up a mag for every cycle in a match before I leave the house (one match takes 39 mags if you do not want to reload between stages - and I don’t). I also have spares in the event one fails.

^ I don't see any reason to use anything else. I have noticed an equivalent to the BX-25 made by ProMag, but that brand has a poor reputation.

Architect - look at the Ruger OEM three pack that has three 10 round Ruger OEM rotary mags in it.

This is what I purchased over a three year period of time until I had what I needed..I bought all of mine from a seller on EBay who sells hundreds of these three packs each month.

Ouch - I just checked - three pack is now $40.00 a pack with free shipping. When I was buying mine (started about 5 years ago) they were running about $25 for a three mag pack.

Back in the day the butler creek 25 was the ticket but now with good steel lips, Just get the Ruger OEM 10, 15 or 25s. Congrats on a good rifle. I have 3 10/22and they are so modular and easy to work on and upgrade. I have a friend that has a 600$ McMillan stock and about 2k into his rifle. Only thing left on it that’s factory Ruger is the receiver. But it’s a serious tack driver.

I think a 10/22 is almost a requirement these days.

I second the factory mags. If I might suggest something that I have come to REALLY appreciate is the Maglula Lula 22 Ruger loader and unloader combo. Those mags have sharp lips particularly when they are new Your thumbs will thank you for it particularly on the larger capacity mags.

End of thread. No reason to use any others.

Thanks everyone. Ruger mags ordered, and on the way. Too bad I have to wait until Christmas for its first range trip.

Ruger mags are the way to go and I highly recommend the Tandemkross magazine bumper for the 10 round mags. It makes it so much easier changing them out.
