Living in a ban state like I do, it is somewhat more difficult to arm yourself with semi auto rifles for self protection.
The best thing to have done, is to have bought what you needed face to face, and decades before FFL to FFL transfers were mandated.
AR-15 and AR-10 rifles require those obscene looking butt stocks that don't have a protruding pistol grip.
They also need to be registered with the state as an "Assault Weapon" and no good will ever come from that.
Also, it's a good thing I am personally not a fan of AR-15 style rifles, even though I know they are effective, modular, and accurate.
However, there are options. If an Assault Weapon "feature" is permanently removed, then registration is not required.

M1A rifles have a flash hider, bayonet lug, and external threads on the barrel for the castle nut which attaches the front sight. All those features are banned here.
With some careful machining, the external threads on the barrel can be completely removed, and the front sight is attached with a pressed on sleeve, which replaces the castle nut in the window.
Chop off the flash hider, and the bayonet lug, along with the barrel muzzle threading removal, and "POOF" it is no longer an Assault Weapon.
Replacing the barrel will return the M1A to original condition, along with buying a few parts.

Living in a ban state also requires wheelbarrow loads of ten round magazines.

This one is for across the neighborhood. Sadlak steel scope mount, Vortex 3 to 9 X 50mm objective, with a battery operated red dot at the crosshairs intersection. Chambered in 7.62 X 51
The leather cheek riser works for me.
The big 50mm objective lens, along with the built in brightness adjustable red dot, is highly effective in low light conditions.

This one is for across the yard. Ruger 186 series Mini 14. Chambered in .223/5.56
Right from the factory, it has no "ban" features.

This one is for across the living room. Ruger Carbine. Chambered in 9mm, and is the "original" Ruger 9mm PCC. It uses common Ruger "P" series pistol magazines.
This also has no "ban" features.

Good options, but if you live in a super ban state like I do, f@^king WA, you can't even do semi-auto.

Sigh.

But I really like the M1A you have.

I always take my selected bolt action rifle for that year out and check it for being sighted in prior to our firearms deer season.
Sometimes, I take the M1A and check it. However, carrying that M1A during deer season for several days and you soon remember just how heavy it is.
But deer hunting with the M1A certainly keeps you at ease with the platform and using it in low light field conditions.

My local gun club closes the outdoor rifle range during the regular firearms deer season. (generally 3 weeks and 2 days duration)
The gun club allows members only deer hunting on the gun club property.
So if you bump, drop, or fall on your primary deer hunting rifle, you are unable to check it for zero.

The old saying "two is one and one is none" is true here, so I always have a spare at the ready.

Unless one expects or runs in circles with a band of druggies, I think there are plenty of options.

Of course your M1A is a fine choice, maybe a little ‘over-kill’ at times.

A reliable M1 Carbine is like a big 10/22, light, handy, various magazine options. Many of us go to the semi-auto shotgun, a pump is nothing to sneeze at. Those ‘mini shells’ seem kinda popular, more rounds in the magazine, lower blast.

I don’t think it’s crazy to have a high-cap lever, 41 mag or similar. One may need to be a little versed with the manual of arms. This is to fit banned state regulations.

For all of it, ‘layered’ is nice, let your German Shepherd give you notice that something may be awry.

The Beretta Cx4 Storm with the Beretta 92 maxwell would be another excellent option. A lever action in .357 or 44 mag would work too.

Those are all some very solid rifles that give up no real functionality by being rendered acceptable for your state laws.

Nice setups.

A Nordic Components magazine extension tube on the pump shotgun of your choice can give you 12+1 (possibly even 14+1 but I'm not 100% sure.)

Stoke that full of buckshot and you have a very competent setup for HD.

Even in a pump gun those numbers are far too evil and frightening for a ban state.

When I lived in a ban state my go to rifle was an M1 garand. A few clips in a butt pouch and wedged onto the sling and you are all set.

While I don’t believe in any bans or limitations and I certainly believe everybody should be able to protect themselves however they see fit, I just don’t feel like I would be in any kind of a real world penalty box with a pump shotgun, lever gun or certainly a 10 round mag fed semi auto rifle.

The biggest “SHTF” situations in my lifetime were the LA Riots and Katrina and neither had Mogadishu pitched firefights happening on the regular.

I just doubt you will ever see a situation in your home where a 12 gauge pump or lever or SKS for example wouldn’t be just as likely to get the job done as anything else in all but the most radically fringe cases.

Again do I think the government should tell you that you can only use a pump shot gun? HELLL NO!!!!! Do I think you are some kind of crazy person if you use a decked out AR? DOUBLE HEEELLLL NOOOO!!! I just think folks get hung up with hardware and forget the software matters far more.

I would be perfectly comfortable with your new HK45 and either the M1A or Mini 14 above.

You're very well equipped with that selection.
I'm also a fan of the various lever gun options as well.

That older Ruger PC9 has developed a bit of a cult following status as well, becoming a bit collectible.

Remington made a pump action rifle based off of the 870 action that accepted AR15 magazines. I believe it is the 715 patrol.

M1A comes with a muzzle brake rather than a flash hider making it compliant. I agree that it is a PIA to comply with ban state rules.
Semi auto shotguns are still legal.

Here in NY, semi auto rifle barrels with threads at the muzzle are banned, along with flash hiders, and bayonet lugs. (manually operated rifles can have threaded muzzles)

Here is the Factory M1A that is NY compliant. Note that there is no muzzle threading. The image is from Springfield Armory's retailer media pak.

Springfield Armory did not make this model when the NY Safe Act legislation was passed in 2013 or so. I had no choice other than to remove "features" in 2013.

True that, but fortunately I have plenty of "grandfathered" items. Semi-auto shotguns are also okay with some limits, and pump are okay as well.

Mostly it's the dumb that makes me frustrated.

^^^ @ sourdough44,

I don't have a German Shepherd, just a pair of Bulldogs. The big one (65 pounds, Olde English Bulldog, female, white) is dumb as a post, half blind, and three quarters deaf.

IMG_20211209_201351395 by cee_Kamp 32ACP, on Flickr

The other Bulldog is a "Mini Bulldog" (35 pounds, mix of French Bulldog, and Olde English Bulldog, male, dark grey) and that little guy is smart, super observant, and blessed with wonderful
vision & hearing. He's the brains of the canine team and he misses absolutely nothing going on around the house & yard.

Yesterday I was sitting outside with a friend and both dogs. A Raccoon trotted up the driveway and the little dog started after the Raccoon. Thankfully, I was able to call him off before he got shredded. But he doesn't miss anything, and when he's in full "alert" mode, the big dumb partner has a "leader" to follow.

Question for those that live in a ban state. Why not just move so you can live your life freely? Usually the ban states also have a very high cost of living, taxes, etc.

If everyone "caved" to the socialists & communists, and moved to a "free" state, there would be nobody left behind to fight the "good fight" and give all of us winning court decisions
like the Bruen decision. Most recent wins, especially in California, have been based off of the Bruen decision.

I have family, children, and grandchildren nearby my location that have homes and careers. I have my recreational property as well.

I like where I live, both for recreation, and quality of life. I just don't like the politics and gun control laws. I actively fight them when/how I can.
It will take several more years for the Bruen decision to work it's way through the assorted levels of Federal Courts.

Another bonus is the motorcycle riding. I can be in the Adirondack Mountains, or the Catskill Mountains, or riding around one of the beautiful Finger Lakes in under two hours from my home.

Taxes? I am retired and don't pay much in the way of taxes. The biggest issue right now is the cost of food, as it is everywhere in the USA.
I shoot, hunt, and conceal carry. Certainly not as freely as you do in Tennessee, but I get by.

I'm old enough, I just don't feel like moving again.

I wouldn't feel under-gunned with any of the rifles you have. If it came down to it, I would have a good lever gun and would feel good with it.

My state was perfectly fine until a bunch of retarded commie shitheads moved here and put the Boulder moonbats in charge.

I'd be much happier if they all went back to wherever the fuck they came from and took all of Boulder and Denver with them.
