OpSpec Training is heading back to Mesa, Arizona this December. We most recently held a class at Rio Salado in December 2016 and we’re looking forward to heading back. This first week in December has provided us great conditions and weather for training and it’s the perfect location to introduce our new class – Applied Fundamentals. For all the details on the class, click here and for information specific to this class in Mesa, click here.

If you’re an intermediate shooter, competitor, or law enforcement officer looking to improve your pistol skills at speed, the three-day Applied Fundamentals is the accelerated program for you. The class focuses on mental planning as a method to run your handgun at speed in a variety of conditions.

You’ll be shooting approximately 1,800 rounds during the intensive three-day program. This is not a course for a beginner.

Applied Fundamentals
The goal of Applied Fundaments is to take the building blocks shooters have learned in Practical Fundamentals or other trigger control-based programs and learn to apply those skills methodically to solve shooting problems. Learn more about this program right here.

Instructors*: HR Hawkins

When: Dec. 7 - 9, 2017, with exact times to be determined.

Class size: Limited to 16 students, with a minimum of 12 students.

Tuition: $675, with a $225 deposit

Range Fees: $20 per day

Local Host: Alan Haynie

Ammunition: Round count for this class will be about 1,800 rounds, 600 per day

Important Links and Information

* Instructors listed for specific programs have committed to teach the class on those dates. Although we do not anticipate changes, travel delays, family emergencies or illness may result in instructor substitutions.

Where:
Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club
Mesa, Arizona

Where to Stay
Country Inn & Suites by Carlson
6650 E. Superstition Springs
Mesa, Ariz. 85206
For reservations, call direct (480) 641-8000. We are working to arrange a discounted rate if possible.

Food at Lunch Break
To ensure you get the most "bang for your buck" we keep lunch breaks to one hour. If you have the ability to bring your lunch, you may do so. There are a few fast food choices 15 minutes or less from the range including Subway and Wendy’s.

Evil exists. You can not negotiate with, bribe or placate evil. You're not going to be able to have it sit down with Dr. Phil for an anger management session either.

Yes, it is Thurs-Sat. The host takes Sunday off, so that is how we scheduled it.

The course is a great addition that I am proud of our staff for coming up with. The concept is outstanding. In a line with 10-20 other shooters you can hide from the instructors by not using correct fundamentals to fix the marksmanship problem that is thrown at you. In this course, it forces compliance making each shot that goes down range an outstanding learning opportunity.

We do a really good job of providing a lot of one on one coaching in our other classes. Keeping that 3-5 students per instructor is what we strive for. This sets us up for lots of one on one and the level of safety we are known for. But, this new class sets the bar much higher. The course has been used by a federal agency over the last year, and has shown results that can't be argued with in cultivating individual shooters.

Jerry, I'm curious. How does this compare to MOAC?

As an OpSpec Student and instructor, and as a guy who has been a part of MOAC, this class is a culmination of ideas that have been brewing for some time.

For your consideration....

MOAC is the extreme application of marksmanship at speed. It focuses on understanding goals in given scenarios and applying a risk reward analysis with regard to how that problem may best be resolve. More simply put...finding the edge, and staying there for a while, so that we may maximize our performance/effectiveness.

Applied Fundamentals is the mathematics that gets us closer to that edge so we waste less time once we get there. Shooters will be asked to take a hard look at whether they are actually utilizing the techniques they require to make effective hits. They will then be given a tool we have developed to force them, at speed, into making better choices and choosing the correct technique, in order to stave off the panic that often creeps into our shooting.

If we were to think of shooting at high levels as a calculus problem. MOAC would be about limits and continuity, AF is about integration... the area under the curve and how we use that information.

More simply, it's another piece of fruit just below the branch MOAC hangs on.

Hotel update, my contact at the County inn and Suites has changed jobs so I don't know if we are going to get the good rate again there or not. I am reaching out to see if I have other contacts at other hotels. Stay tuned before you book your hotel room.

I liked Rio Salado, last year!

Email sent with a question.

"The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -Mencken
