OpSpec Training has not been to Florida in at least two years, and we're thrilled to announce we will be in Florida for a Practical Fundamentals class at the Volusia County Gun & Hunt Club near Daytona Beach, Florida. The club is located about 14 miles (less than 20 minutes) from the Daytona International Speedway and the International Airport. We do have space available! If you have experience working from a holster, and have good gun-handling skills, you meet the pre-requisites for this class. If you've taken OpSpec Training's Intro to Practical Fundamentals, Practical Fundamentals, competed in USPSA, IDPA or 3-Gun matches or have law enforcement or military training you also meet the pre-requisites for this class. Practical Fundamentals Using a building-block approach, Practical Fundamentals encourages students to focus on the process of running the gun, tamping down the emotional desire to see results on the target. By using a variety of dry fire and live fire exercises, students are brought through the fundamentals of marksmanship with a focus on trigger control to help the shooter make fast hits on small targets, on demand. Instructors*: Jerry Jones & Doug Flavin When: Jan. 19 & 20, 2018, exact start time TBD Class size: Limited to 24 students, with a minimum of 12 students. Tuition: $450, with a $225 deposit Range Fees: $20 per day. Local Host: Mike Staley Ammunition: Round count for Practical Fundamentals will be approximately 750 - 850 rounds Important Links and Information
* Instructors listed for specific programs have committed to teach the class on those dates. Although we do not anticipate changes, travel delays, family emergencies or illness may result in instructor substitutions. Where: Volusia County Gun & Hunt Club 4845 E. SR 44 New Smyrna Beach, FL 3216 Map Where to Stay As you can imagine, there are an unending selection of accommodation choices in the area as the club is close to the Daytona Beach area. There are also many options just west of the range in DeLand about less than 25 minutes away. (The DeLand options may be less expensive than Daytona Beach in January.) Suggested hotels in the Deland, Florida area include the Comfort Inn DeLand or Hampton Inn & Suites Deland, both near the intersection of International Speedway Blvd. and N. Woodland Blvd in DeLand. (Links take you to Trip Advisor reviews.) Food at Lunch Break To ensure you get the most "bang for your buck" we keep lunch breaks to one hour. If you have the ability to bring your lunch, you may do so. If you need to run out and get a quick meal, there is a Subway located about 10 minutes East of the range at the southwest corner of the intersection of State Route 44 and State Route 415. There is a McDonald's located about 15 minutes east on State Route 44 just prior to I-95.This message has been edited. I've shot at that range a number of times, the Deland Hampton Inn is pretty new and where I stayed in the past. And there is a Publix on the way to the range so you can grab a sandwich for lunch. ------- A turbo: Exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens, and you go faster. You fellers need to come to North Carolina...but this range is less than an hour from my mother's house in Florida...tempting... Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones

You got a range close and want to host it? I'm down with it. Ranges in WNC are hard to come by. At least ones that make me feel safe. There are a couple that you are shooting into a hillside with lots of trees and stuff and there "shouldn't be" anyone back there. I want to do WNC in '18 anyways. Its been three or four years since I've done a class there.

I really wish I did...my life is in a cycle right now that is 100% work or kids, with zero hobby/free time. 60 hours of OT in July...just had 3 requests for full days to train our animal control people CPR in September, on top of patrol work and teaching the academy recruits for a week. All that to say...I haven't even been to a range that wasn't the PD's for a solid 4 months. But if you find a spot in NC for 2018 (unless its up around that fancy place in the NE corner), I'll be there! Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. The training date & location sound excellent. Never been to the hosting club, but I have taken this training class in prior years. Now to see if my 2018 budget is up for it. James ------------------------------------- An analog man in a digital world.

Trying to save the money to attend! I really want to do this class.

That is my spot. |
So I have a great desire to do this class. I am certainly not a pro but I don't suck at running pistols. No formal training- a basic CCW class 18 years ago and a refresher CCW/ Basic HG course a few months back with the ProArms guys here in Florida (John, Terri, Allen and CSM Ray that day.) My friends that shoot IDPA have told me I'd surprise myself at how well I'd do but I haven't made time what with the demands of having 3 chillins who participate and compete in things. So: Not wanting to have to UN-learn crap, am I ok to come or do I need some NRA/ pre-reqs? If you think I am ok to go, what about a friend of mine that is new enough, he calls me for advice? He had his basic CCW class and was also at the ProArms class? Finally, do I bring a couple of WG226, G19s or my2022? My other 2 buddies that want to come will be bringing G19 and MP9.... Thanks in advance and is there room for 3 more still? ***************** Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Ben Franklin

A few things- You should be able at a minimum to do the following safely- Load/Unload/reload your pistol. Draw and present the pistol. Safely holster the pistol. Understand and abide by the four safety rules. That is the minimum. Back in the day, it was not uncommon that we would have dude's show up to class with a gun in one hand, a holster in the other, saying what the hell do I do with this? We had to put a stop to that by establishing a pre-req. Lots of different skill levels take this class. In the mix of any class we will have- .mil special operations guys, people who only have had their CCDW class, fed special operations guys, people who have taken a couple of NRA classes, local LE special operations guys, D level USPSA competitors. That is a real wide mix. But, they all can do, at minimum, the stuff above. The more training you can get, the better off you will always be. Our way is not "the" way, but just another way of getting fast and accurate. I can proudly say that based upon student feedback, we have a near 100 percent student satisfaction in their experience with us. Pick one gun and stay with it. We are known for DA/SA stuff, so that probably wouldn't be a bad choice. I'll probably teach with a 2022 or 226. G19 is an excellent choice as well, you can't go wrong with it. There is still space available. Anything else I can do for you, let me know.

Thank you sir. Your reputation(s) at least in my book were never in doubt- and I was kind of looking forward to the DA/SA aspect of your expertise. Most classes here seem to shoot G19 or 320 more. Luckily, several good revolver guys around so I have learned my model 66 can and has help(ed) some with DA shooting. (Although the reset on the 2022 is troublesome for me and I don't always hit it right in more rapid fire, I do like the feel of it and need more work.) As long as the love of my life is cool with it, I am excited about training with you guys. Thanks for your response! This message has been edited.
