We shot a modified vintage sniper match today. For the summer off-season, instead of shooting a string at 300 yards and a string at 600 yards, they shoot both strings at 600 yards. It keeps us out of the sun as the 600 yard line is covered.

I only have one vintage sniper sandbag at the moment and I shared a bag with another shooter on the second relay. His bag was much softer and it took me a while to get used to shooting with his bag. As a result, my score suffered.

I shot horribly for the first string. Started off with two 8's and dropped two more in the 9-ring. Scored an abysmal 94-2x.

My son shot the next string using our normal bag and outshot me! He scored a 96-2x!

Now by the second string, I learned how to shoot with this softer bag. I recovered with a 97-1x

My son didn't do as well as he did on the first string but still finished with a 92-0x.

This was his first time scoring over 90 points at 600 yards and it was a good recovery from last month's disaster, which I never bothered posting about. He had 3 save rounds at 600 and finished in the 60's.

The big accomplishment of the day was that as a team, we finally scored in the bronze category. My son was so excited and I think the success of the day showed him he's good at it and he seemed to be more excited by the shooting sport, as a whole. I think he's going to me more invested in this sport moving forward.

We celebrated with a trip to Longhorn Steakhouse. I treated him to a nice medium rare New York Strip steak. For me, it was a nice ribeye.

I ordered a second sandbag from Creedmoor about 3 weeks ago, so it should be here any day now. I won't have to go through the sandbag fiasco for the next match.

Which bag?

And congratulations to you both.
Hopefully his interest will continue to grow. It isn't uncommon for offspring to not wish to follow in footsteps.

Thanks! I haven’t pushed him hard on the shooting sports but I ride roller coasters with him a lot. That’s his favorite activity to do with me. In return he participates in the shooting sports with me.

And when I say I ride roller coasters a lot, I mean we don’t go more that a week or two without riding them. One roller coaster at universal studios we rode 138 times in the last 18 months.

We’re going to shoot at camp Perry the year and when we’re done we’re going to cedar point, OH to ride roller coasters for two days. Cedar point is only an hour from camp Perry.

This is the only bag allowed in the VS matches.

That's awesome! It's good to do stuff with your son. Mine has joined me for a couple of USPSA matches this year...it's been a good time.

What do you use for fill? (I noticed they recommend getting it from another source.)

I use crushed walnut shell lizard bedding from Petco or Amazon. I used the 25 quart size.

My bag probably weighs 32 pounds. The one I borrowed was probably 10 or 15 pounds and had some sort of synthetic filler. It also was maybe 3/4ths full.

I used a tall kitchen trash bag as a liner and put it inside the shooting bag, then emptied the entire contents of the lizard bedding into the bag and tied it off.

Thanks. Crushed walnut shells is not something I’ve ever seen mentioned as a filler, but if it adds that much weight I can see how it would be a benefit in some situations. Although I have a large L.L. Bean tote bag full of shooting bags (and then some), I’ve never really found anything I like for supporting the rifle directly. I try them and keep going back to a bipod (I realize that’s not an option for your type of shooting).

I’m still curious about bags and their fillers, though, in case I ever start getting into shooting with a PRS type “barricade” and can’t use a bipod or tripod. I do a lot of shooting while standing with an Arca clamp on a tripod, but have been thinking I should try something more challenging.
