I haven't been a member of a gun club in quite some time
I finally joined a local gun club last year so that I can get some trigger time.
I generally only have the winter months to do any serious training but unfortunately, the indoor range doesn't allow rifles because it damages the back stop. Is this normal? Shooting outdoors in the snow really sucks.
What kind of back stop is needed for indoor rifle shooting? Right now it's an angled steel plate that we repaint before we leave. I don't know how thick the plates are.

Our gun club's indoor range uses rubber blocks as a backstop. Rimfire and non-magnum centerfire pistol calibers only.
Our local Sheriff's dept. has an indoor range with a steel backstop that is only rated for rounds under 2000fps. So no patrol rifle shoots inside.
Shoot straight has rifle lanes as well, kept separate from the pistol lanes, you can of course shoot your pistol in the rifle range but not the other way around at Shoot Straight..This message has been edited. Last edited by: HRK,

I've run across a pair of indoor rifle ranges in NY, Knights in Goshen and Blue Line in Elmsford. I know of one down in Texas, The Gun range just outside of FT Hood. They all use deflector style bullet traps and rubber to handle the rifle rounds. I've known of two indoor ranges that burned (The Gun Range in TX and The Firing line in NY) because of rifle rounds (porbably tracers).
I've never run across a private indoor range that did rifle.

It depends, some ranges are structured for rifle rounds, some aren't. The sportsman's club that I belong to also has an indoor pistol only range. The indoor range that I belong to allows rifles.
My old department had an indoor range. It was only for pistol. We changed the backstop to allow for rifles, since we were going to transition to them - we kind of wanted to be able to shoot them at our own range.
It just depends.

Some indoor ranges will allow rifle caliber with frangible ammunition.
They may require you buy it from them so they know what you have.

I think you really need a "snail drum" trap system or similar system for rifles (at least for it to last any amount of time). Most indoor ranges I've been to had simple angled steel plate and sand or rubber.

Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) Hunters and Anglers Club has a rifle rated indoor range.
Any dog can be a Guide Dog if you don't care where you're going.

there is an indoor range in Orange CT that recently went out of business (lost FFL due to errors???). its been closed for quite some time - it was rated up to 308. Anyone want to partner up and buy the place?!?

The two indoor ranges I frequent (one now, one of them closed unfortunately) are rated for .50 BMG. Seems like a bit much on a 25 yard range, but you can do it if you want to!
