Considering a P365XL & SAS slide for my P365 Login/Join

I’ve had a P365 for about two years and enjoyed it. I probably carry it 75% of the time I carry a pistol. Every time I hold a P365XL I want to get one but haven’t seriously considered it until now. I did consider getting the parts to convert my P365 to an XL but for just a little more I can get a decent used one locally. I know the early P365s had some issues and read about some XLs having failures to go fully into battery. Is there a date or serial number range to avoid with the XLs?

I’ve also been curious about the SAS version of the P365. For that I’d just get a slide from SIG. I don’t want a ported barrel and don’t care about the anti-snag controls. The sight is what interests me. Do folks who’ve shot with both prefer the standard P365 or SAS?

My current P365:

I have two P365's, two P365XL's, and just recently added an "X" slide. Absolutely no interest in an SAS. That sight is goofy as hell.

I'd say if the XL is reasonably priced, jump on it.

Have you shot with the SAS? I haven't but kind of liked it when handling one in a shop.

I haven't shot an SAS. I don't know anyone who owns one and there are no indoor ranges to rent one here.

I've looked at them a couple of times in the store and just didn't care for the sight or the controls.

PS, great picture, you've got a real talent. I need to work on my skills... Big Grin

Thanks, I do enjoy taking gun & knife photos.

It would be great if I could shoot an SAS. The slide alone is $300 from SIG but I’m very intrigued by it.

SIG228 needs to change his handle to SIG365. lol

And going off of every pic photoman posts, I'd say he has a $20k camera and knows how to use it. Wink

I have a SAS, but haven't been out to shoot it yet. Weather here is just now getting nice.
I will say it points nice and the sights are always right there. Naturally, like I'm pointing my finger.

I believe you can get the SAS, without the ported barrel. Or I remember them selling the SAS slide only without the porting.
I've been curious to know if I can tell a difference... warm weather is coming!

I picked up a non-ported SAS about 3 weeks ago, have put 150 rounds thru it so far. I like it but the sights take a bit to get used to. No one is going to win a bullseye competition with it but it is certainly fine for up close and personal encounters. I bought it to replace a S&W Shield 1.0, primarily using pocket carry so the smooth slide is a real plus.

This is my first 365 so I can't compare it to the non SAS version.

My son and I both have 365s and he always opts to carry with the extended 12 round magazine. Being a poor college kid, he has wanted to try the XL frame on his standard slide. I bought one with the anticipation he would steal it from me when he arrives home for the summer. I have it installed on mine and I can’t believe how much I actually like it. I’ve been thinking about adding an XL but really don’t have a use for it. The addition of the XL frame has scratched that itch.

That’s how I felt about the SAS when I handled them in store; it seemed very natural. SIG sells non-ported SAS slides currently for $300. I don’t know if I’ll end up getting one or not. The standard slide & sights really do everything I need so the desire for an SAS slide is just a symptom of Gear Acquisition Syndrome. The money is probably better put towards a P365XL.

I really enjoy doing the gun & knife photos. I probably spend too much time doing it.
I actually ditched all my mid-level Nikon photography gear a few years ago for Olympus & Panasonic Micro Four Thirds gear. It’s a system that many photography enthusiasts consider inferior. I like it for the smaller size & weight of the gear. The photo in the initial post was taken with a Panasonic GF2 & 14-45mm lens. It’s equipment released in 2011 (old for digital camera gear) that you could get for about $150, maybe cheaper. I keep that setup in my car.

These are a few random shots I’ve taken with various Micro Four Thirds gear. Other people get better photos with this gear and there are lots of great photos taken with phones now. With both firearms and cameras, I think effectiveness has more to do with the shooter than the gear.

I don't really care for the flush controls of the SAS either, but the slide on the other hand is pretty cool, and the sight is a neat concept. I actually liked the sight, but ultimately went with the standard P365. I do carry it pretty much every day, however, there are times when I do carry something else and I just didn't care to have to vary the sights that much between concealed carry guns.

I like the idea of putting an XL frame on the P365 though. Best of all worlds there and really it is just as concealable. I run 12 rounders in the P365 right now and although I love the feel of the extended grip, I do notice that my palm can get in the way when ejecting the mag, something that an XL frame would alleviate.

Nice photos by the way. I am a photographer myself and I'm impressed with todays M43 performance. I use a GH5S for video, but I may start looking into using M43 for stills too.

Awesome pics. My work photography generally is of a clinical nature more than artistic and not for the general public.

I bought a P365 standard a few years back. Shoots wonderful and has replaced any other off duty type guns.
I did buy the SAS slide (non ported) when it became available because my eyes are such that the front sight is out of focus on any handgun. The target is clear, and since you use this sight like a red dot (focus on the target, not the sight) it works really well for me. I did loose a little of the tight accuracy of the P365 at distance, but for what it's designed for, it's still perfect.
I liked the sight so much I put one on my issued G30S and had my Kahr CW380 slide milled like a SAS and one mounted on that.

The sight isn't for everybody, and you have to learn to use it, but if it works for you, go for it.

Well this was fast and I attribute it to my wallet loosening based on this conversation, but I ordered the XL grip module last night and a few flush floor plates to convert the 12 rounders. Luckily we sell 15 rounders here so I will have to try that out.

Thanks, that’s helpful since you have experience with both.

I too thought about getting a SAS or XL slide but ultimately knew I wanted a mRDS on my 365 (mostly negates the need for a longer 365XL slide with longer sight radius and the added muzzle velocity isn’t that significant). So I just added a XL grip module and milled the slide for a 507K. My “365X” (did these mods before the 365X was available) is pretty much perfect for me - especially with an adjustable GG flat trigger.

My two cents:

An expensive and thoroughly worthless sight, that Meprolight Bull's-Eye thing that SIG thought was somehow a "good idea" for the SAS. A couple or so years back I bought one of those sights to try on a G19; near-complete waste of money. Took a distance-capable handgun and turned it into a VERY close quarters pistol. Even worse than than usual SIG/HK "combat" iron sight holdover sight picture (that I normally detest, I admit), because it obscures even more of your ability to see the surrounding context of your POA when shooting at any sort of distance...like at a dot sticker on the paper target on the range. So if it's nothing close to having any precise-friendly, "bull's-eye" sighting capability, then it must be for close contact defensive scenarios on a human-sized target? Maybe? Except who the hell will actually take the TIME to sight on an attacking bad guy at close quarters rather than simply rely on instinctual point-and-shoot? For me, it was an ill-spent $180 (bought at discount) down the tube. Only thing "good" about the experience was that I learned what a piece of shit that sight is. I suppose that's worth something; hence my "near-complete" observation.

Fast forward the SIG: with the SAS there have been reports of inaccurate fire even when shooters have been able to figure out some kind of technique of sighting with the bloody thing. Guns scoring hits repeatedly off to the right or left. Whether it's due to out-of-spec milling/tapping of the slide, bad assembly of the sight itself, or just the realities of stacking tolerances between the manufacturing of sight and slide, the SAS may or may not be acceptably accurate for you regardless if you're normally a dead-eye kind of shooter. Given that there's zero means to mechanically adjust the sight on the gun, the only way to compensate for the inaccuracy is to figure out how much to point off to one side or the other. Or get a new sight. Or slide. Or both. At least with my G19 I could drift the damn thing in that slide's dovetail slot if inaccurate fire had been an issue with my particular Mep sight.

Micro Four Thirds has been a good system for me. I shot with Nikon APS-C gear from 2007 to 2019. I had a Panasonic GF2 & Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 for a few years that I used for something small and easy to carry for a few years during that time. I got nostalgic in 2019 and bought that setup again then jumped in further with a GF1 body and Olympus 60mm f/2.8. After using that gear for a few months I decided to invest further and sell off the Nikon gear because I just rarely carried the Nikon stuff due to size & weight. I’ve been happy with the change. I do think it takes a little more time and effort to get the results I want from the Olympus RAW files compared to Nikon’s. But it’s pretty negligible now since I’m used to working with them. I get many more shots now because I’m much more likely to carry the gear.

This is what I’ve got. I bought it all used, mostly for really good prices. I just can’t justify spending big money on photo gear anymore, especially the bodies. They lose value too quickly.
Panasonic GF1
Panasonic GF2 (actually 2; one came with an underwater housing I bought for them)
Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II
Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark I
Olympus 60mm f/2.8
Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro
Olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 R
Olympus 17mm f/1.8 (this & the E-M5 is my walking around setup)
Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7
Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH OIS
Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH MEGA OIS LUMIX G VARIO

I have seen reports of POA/POI issues that cause concern. In one of them the guy said he ended up shimming the sight with cooking foil, certainly not an ideal solution.

I have a couple of p365s.

I traded someone here one of my slides for a sas slide.

It slipped right on and I have been carrying it since.

As a self defense gun, for the distance I am likely to use it, I don't think I shoot them much different.

I sold my P365SAS because of the sight. It is windage adjustable, but very sensitive to get just right. You do have at least 4-5” of adjustability at 25’ The sight is usable, but I much prefer standard sights. The night sight is a joke if you try to use them vs point shooting, very hard to find, somewhat dim.
