Definitely not a lightweight! My second ever carry pistol, when I decided that of course a 9mm just wasn’t going to cut it.

Carried it in a Galco horizontal shoulder holster. Today, my back goes into spasms just thinking about that…

I sometimes carry a 457. It just feels good on the hip.

Many years ago the Fresno PD transitioned from the 645 to another pistol, and when the officers were given a choice to purchase theirs my SIL made the good decision to do so. I really enjoyed shooting that pistol enough to buy my own 4506 from a member here. They are heavy, but such a pleasure to shoot!

I mean it’s a pig. An absolute monster of a cannon.

But that said, it has a decent trigger, nice short reset, it more than meets service pistol accuracy, and above all, it is reliable. Straight up feeds anything you can cram into the magazine. On mine, that included empty cases.

I’ve posted this before I think, but I found a blue steel smith 45 a bit ago, the 4505.

Also big, also heavy, also accurate and reliable. But blue steel.

I’m not saying that watching TV as a teen had any impact on my first handgun choices!

According to Wiki, you are correct. Dornaus & Dixon caved and the 645 was the replacement, starting w/ the 3rd season.

When the 645 came out I was in college and couldn’t afford one. I did have a 659.

I now own an early 4506 and a 4506-1 now. If I ever find a nice 645 at a store I’ll probably pick it up.

Thanks,

Owned the 645 and 745. Now have the 845. Worth the wait.

What great photos!! I bought a S&W 645 in 1986, and it was consistently more accurate than my 1974 Colt Gold Cup National Match .45 acp. It was heavy on the hip, but a comforting beast to shoot - it devoured any type of handled, and over time the trigger became much smoother. It's the only gun I deeply regret selling, Thanks so much for showing us these great photos. They invoke great nostalgia for me.

I saw one in a shop in 2008, went back the next day to get it, and it was gone.

Haven't seen one since.

Only one of the few that got away.

I have a 645 I inherited almost thirty years ago. I haven't shot it in probably ten years.
I'll have to dig that big tank of a pistol out of the safe for my next range trip.
