Stout. Lol. Muzzle blast will be fun, too.
Very nice gun!

cslingerI’ve never cared for .44 mag. You will……notice shooting it.

abnmacvIt's a handful, backpacking in bear country it would be a good companion.

bryanZ06You're on a roll with the revolvers!
Definitely post a range report when you get a chance.

Thinking about swapping the sq butt conversion grips onto it.
The 629 classic hunter handles recoil extremely well, so I’ve got faith this one won’t be too bad.

I would honestly put something like hogue monogrips on that. Ugly? Yes. Far more comfortable to shoot? Hell yes.

TheFrontRangeLove it and, of course, that Magnum will also accommodate .44 Special; I found the latter to be more than pleasant to shoot.
Edited to add: I couldn’t recall if you’d acquired a .44 prior in your recent revolver-renaissance.

OttoSigSo if we look at recoil as subjective, here is where I’m at.
I shoot the 629 Classic with hogue hardwoods that came on it. Very pleasant from Magtech range ammo, through Hornady, to Underwood hot loads. Though I’ve never shot Buffalo bore through it.
My cousin’s Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull with Hogue fingered rubber grips (sounds like those should be Trojan brand instead) won’t be shot again by me. 2 rounds total and that’s a hard NO. So long as this one is closer to my 629 with hogue hardwoods than his 454 with hogue rubbers I’m gonna be okay.
I fully admit knowingly that the rubber grips are better at recoil absorption. But I also hate the feel on my ever sweaty palms in the south and against my skin or clothing.
Thefrontrange, this is 44mag no. 2:
I’m still strongly considering a custom built Bisley with Octagon barrel 4.62” in the future.

92fstechHonestly, recoil shouldn't be unbearable. You'll feel it, but it can be managed. My snubby .44 is a Model 69 L-Frame, so it's smaller and a bit lighter than your 629, and I don't find it to be too hateful. If I go through a box of 50 in one range session, I'm usually pretty good until I get to 35 or 40, and then the shakes start. But the first few cylinders are just fine, and it's actually incredibly accurate.
The 329PD is absolutely brutal. It no longer wears those wood grips in the pic. The first round would just about break your hand with those. Even with the rubber pachmayrs it has on it now, I'm done after a couple of cylinders. That's probably more than I'd have time to get off in the real world, so it works for what it is. I had my wife sew some leather padding into an old work glove so I can get longer practice sessions in with it. It's that bad.
But even with the shorter barrel the extra weight makes that 69 a lot more pleasant to shoot. I'd assume the same would be true of your 629. The grips on yours look like Altmonts, and I've found those to have very sharp 90 degree angles around the edges. Those are unpleasant under recoil. I've found that sanding them down helps some, but rubber grips make it even better. Even if they don't cover the backstrap, you want a design that spreads the force out evenly over a wide area of your hand.

OttoSigVery true, I’ll throw the nframe sq butt conversion grips from the 610 on it.
I’m holding the 610 until my brother saves up enough to buy if from me. The GP-100 and Bisley Blackhawk (under construction) will get all my 10mm revolver range time.
I don’t like round butt revolver grips, it leaves at least 20% of my palm without contact on the grip frame at all. I used to think I liked bobbed 1911s. They felt better in the hand but way worse side by side under recoil.
ETA: 92, I’m pretty sure we both follow each others posts close…and soon as I start to think I know your collection you surprise me! I need to make it out to see firsthand one day.

Sounds like a good stop on my way to Chicago/Kenosha, depending on how far east you are.

trapper189Nice gun. If my Model 29 Bounty Hunter is any indication, the recoil shouldn’t be that bad. A 329PD weighs over a pound less which would be great for carrying, but not so much for shooting. Yowza.

patwVery nice. I miss my .44 629 I had years ago but with a short barrel in a gun like that, my wrists might hate me.

OttoSigShot it today, recoil wasn’t bad at all. Maybe the finest pistol I’ve ever held.

MikeinNCNice gun.
Mrs. Mike got me a M69 4” 44 magnum last year. Since I reload-I load them to 44 special velocity and recoil is a nothing.

copaupI just recently traded that gun’s twin. Super nice revolver, I just wasn’t shooting it. Every time I went to get a 44 out of the safe I wanted a 4 inch barrel and the 4 inch gun wasn’t any harder to carry. It sure did get some attention on an indoor range though. Fun gun.
