Break in period for m-18? Login/Join

Does the Sig m-18 need a break in period? Just picked up a Sig M-18 over run LE pistol. Cleaned it up and lubed it. Hand cycled the slide and it has slide drag sometimes. Took it to the range today and sometimes the slide does not fully go flush with the front of the frame but would still fire. It was as if by pulling the trigger the slide went fully flush with the front of the frame. I was shooting 124 Federal fmj. It never ftf and always went bang. It is like it has a weak recoil spring.

I never had an issue with mine. It functioned perfectly right off the bat with 115 grain fmj.

Nope. Mine broke just fine on the first outing, less than 50 rounds in.

RDS plate/rear sight screw sheared in half, dropping both the broken head piece and the entire second screw down into the trigger mechanism rendering it dead.

Yay. Oh, not that type of break in period....

These are non-fitted guns made on fairly precise machinery with generous tolerances. They should not need to be "broken in."

Went back to the range today a ran some Federal 124 HST HP through it. And it ran perfect. Ammo seemed a bit more hot. I wonder if the ammo I shot yesterday was a bad lot?

Sometimes we tend to over-analyze. You said it ran. Accept it.

I read or saw somewhere that the guide rod has a specific orientation, like the part that rests against the barrel has to be skinny part up. But any problems with this will show up in the functional dry check.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." When you 'hand cycled' the slide, were you riding it forward, or sling-shotting it? At the range, when it sometimes did not go fully flush w/ the front of the Frame, was on a fresh/fully loaded Magazine and you were chambering the first round, or during normal semi-auto fire. The P320 is designed to cycle under the force/energy from firing a projectile, so don't ride the slide when chambering. Also, it is possible for the P320 to need a little 'break-in' to allow the components to wear a bit to overcome minor tolerance stacking, but not much.

I am not sure many people would have noticed this happening. I thought I had a squib. I felt something off in the recoil impluse. I used the slide release and the slingshot method. It was under normal slow fire. Trigger pull felt different, that is why I noticed it. As I would pull the trigger the slide went flush / completed the cycle with the front of the frame and the weapon would fire. I am not new to firearms. Retired military, lots of trigger time etc. No lip wrist etc. Maybe bad ammo? It is dagging on the same area where the slide meets resistance when you are putting the slide back on the frame, just before the rear rail section behind the slide stop. If it was a 1911A1 it would be the slide dragging on the disconector. Going to put a few more rounds through it before calling it good.

I would do a VERY thorough inspection, clean & lube it properly, ensure that the Recoil Spring Ass'y is installed correctly (Rey HRH made reference to this but it's in the manual), and put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Then I'd field strip it and look for any unusual wear. If you're still having the issue then I'd contact SIG Customer Service.

This, OP did you strip and lube before you went out or since? I noticed my slide wasn't lubed much at all but still worked perfectly. The only time I've had issues is when my wife was holding too low on the grip and had a few stove pipes.

Yes I do that with all my new firearms. I even had another person shot it on the 1st range trip to see if it was me. Same results. The second range trip was uneventful. I fire my carry ammo and the pistol seemed to smooth out. Today I returned to the ranged and fired 200 rounds of Federal 124 FMJ and it ran perpect. I just think it had to have a few rounds to wear in the slide to frame. I feel confident to carry now. Never had any break in period with my Sig 228 so I was surprised with this one.

The P320 generally should NOT require a break-in period. However a SIG failing to go completely into battery is not a new thing; we had one of those (overpriced) M18 commemorative editions that would fail to completely go into battery whenever you would drop the slide, whether using the slide stop, slingshotting the slide or overhand drop (the latter two without a magazine in the magwell). Not too long ago I had to send in a customer's P210 Carry for the same problem. And Hickok45 rather (in)famously had a P365 do the same thing multiple times on video when he initially reviewed the gun. So the convergence of a bad combination of tolerances CAN indeed happen.

My advice is that if it continues to occur with 115gr ammo, call SIG CS and have them take a look at the gun. They fixed the issue with the customer's P210 Carry with some "refitting", but I don't know what happened with the M18 since someone bought the gun as-is before we could send the pistol back to SIG.

As for Hickok45, the impression I got is that his gun "broke in", since he started using it in his carry rotation not long after his review video.

You seem to had developed a 'stutter'...Maybe delete the other FOUR posts that followed your initial quote/reply to Parrisghost's post. Wink

If you're unsure/not familiar w/ how to do this, click 'Edit Post' and then 'Delete Message'.

Anyway, glad you seem to have the issue w/ your M18 worked out... Cool
