dwd1985P228 parts in P229-1 frame compatibility issue
A few years ago I was able to get my hands on a complete W German P228 parts kit that included all parts except the frame. I then got a hold of a P229-1 frame, and installed all of the P228 parts into it, and everything fit and functioned fine.
Recently, I got my hands on a new style P229 slide with the external extractor. I transferred the barrel and recoil spring into the new slide, but it wont fit onto the frame, which makes no sense to me. The barrel works in the W German slide on the P229 frame. The P229 slide fits onto the frame when I take the barrel out. But for whatever reason the barrel into the P229 slide onto the P229-1 frame wont work. Any idea if a simple barrel swap to a P229-1 barrel will work? Or wouldn't that also require a swp of the locking block?

wgsigsWhat caliber is the P229 slide? I am pretty sure there are minor differences between a .40/.357, P229-1, and original 9mm P229 slides, and between the short extractor Legacy slide and the long extractor "P229-1 E2" slide.

Your new style P229 slide will need the 229-1 barrel. The P228 barrel will not work, as you found out. Different heights and profiles. And, take out the P228 locking insert and put in the 229-1 locking insert, also. So, basically, you will now have a true new style P229 (9).

Thank you. Since it’s likely going to be impossible to find a 9mm locking block, would the P228 parts work in an older style internal extractor P229 slide?

You must mean the short external extractor in the older style P229 slide (aka, the Legacy slide). There is no such a thing as the P229 slide with internal extractor, whether old or new style.
So, the answer is yes, the P228 parts will work in the Legacy P229 slide.

It's a current rather than discontinued part so I don't know what problem you might have other than one of the various retailers having one in stock or not.

I believe Q stated you needed a P229-1 locking insert. The P229-1 locking block is the same as the current .40/.357 one so you should have no problems finding one.

dwd1985Thanks, all, for the responses. Anyone know the part number for the locking block I’d need?

All the major sources (TGS, MGW, Numrich, Matrix Precision) are out of stock. Your best bet is looking on fleabay.

am94pmdwd1985 I've got one that came out of what I believe was 229-1 parts kit. The only marking Is can find are on the lower right hand side. It is marked 510. Looks like the one in the link below. If this will work for shot me an email.
https://www.midwestgunworks.co...rod/LOCKING-INSERT-4May 02, 2021, 07:55 PM
dwd1985So the original locking block that came in the slide is marked “229-40/357 Rev. 06”. That Ike doesn’t work with the 9mm slide and P228 barrel. It will allow the slide the fit without the barrel though.
The locking insert that came with my P228 parts kit is unmarked. It worked fine with the P228 slide but not with the P229 slide snd P228 barrel.
Is there a THIRD locking block that I should be looking for?

wgsigsThere is what could be called a "universal" locking insert that will work with P229-1 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 Sig barrels, but not the p228 one. My understanding is that this locking block is essentially the same as a .40/.357 insert.
I may have missed it, but does your P229 slide have a long extractor or a short one? Do you know what caliber the slide is? I believe the P228 barrel will not fit and function properly in a long extractor slide, regardless of caliber, or in the .40 short extractor Legacy slide.

Like I said above, if you want to use the new P229 slide you just got, you have to get the 229-1 barrel. There is no way around this. The P228 barrel does NOT work in the new style (long eternal extractor) P229 slide.

But isn't the P229-1 slide different (narrower and barrel opening smaller) from the .40 slide so that the P229-1 barrel will not fit the .40 slide properly?

There are 3 configurations:
P229 .40/357 barrel and compatible slide.
P229-1 9mm barrel and compatible slide.
P228/legacy 9mm barrel and compatible slide.
The first two use the same locking block.

Not talking about the .40 slide, here. OP said nothing about .40 slide, so I'm simply talking about the 229-1 slide (with the assumption that's what he got). And, putting the 228 barrel into it is a no go.
Must get the 229-1 barrel.

dwd1985Ok last question: I have found a P229-1 slide and the original locking block that was in the frame when I bought it, and since that's universal between calibers, once I drop in the barrel, all should be well. However, I am down to one final issue: I don't know if the slide is from a .40 or a 9mm. The guy I bought it from doesn't remember. I understand the only difference between the two calibers slides is the opening in the front where the muzzle end of the barrel sits. Can anyone with a .40 and 9mm P229 slide give me a measurement so I can compare it to mine and determine which caliber slide I have?
May 04, 2021, 05:49 PM
12131^^^ Can't help you with measurement comparisons, since I don't do .40. But, just want to mention that, since you really don't know what caliber your slide is, then saying you have the 229-1 slide only serves to confuse everyone else.
229-1 is terminology only for the 9mm. There is no such a thing as 229-1 for the .40 or .367. So, as it stands right now, all you have is a newer style P229 slide, caliber unknown.

Hope someone will come along with the measurements.

ah3I don't have a P229-1 9mm but here's data including a legacy P229 9mm.
P229 legacy 9mm width of opening at slide face: 0.55 in
P229 legacy 9mm width of opening for barrel hood at breech face: 0.409 in
P229 .40 width of opening at slide face: 0.572 in
P229 .40 width of opening for barrel hood at breech face: 0.437 in
P226 9mm width of opening at slide face: 0.552 in
P226 9mm width of opening for barrel hood at breech face: 0.409 in
P226 .40 width of opening at slide face: 0.552 in
P226 .40 width of opening for barrel hood at breech face: 0.437 in
