My SW 442 is probably my most carried gun. I've had it for maybe 10-12 years and it's never given me one problem or one reason not to love it.

Apologize for no pic, but a 340m&p is my revolver carry when I opt for that. And no I do not feel under gunned while doing so as I shoot it extremely well.

It's kinda crazy to go back to my original post in this thread and see how things have progressed in the past almost 5 years.

At the time, my pocket revolver of choice was the 360J. A couple of years I decided that a hammerless gun would make more sense for pocket carry, so I picked up a used 642 which ended up having a broken frame, so I returned it and bought a 640 Pro. I carried that thing for several years until a couple of months ago I picked up a 642UC that has become my EDC BUG at work, and around-the-house gun. Last week I tweaked my back pretty good, and it was awesome to have a lightweight carry option available to get me though a few days where I really didn't feel up to strapping on the P229 or P320.

While I've gone through three different guns in the past five years, they've all ridden the same Galco Pocket holster, which I still really like, and while it shows a good deal of "finish wear", it's still structurally sound.



In that same post I talked about taking my Blackhawk in .45 Colt hiking. I still have that gun, but I've got much more convenient options for putting on miles in the backcountry these days. We're heading to Alaska in a few weeks and I'm taking this:



It's kinda cool to look back at a thread like this and see the changes over the years.

S&W 642. It’s a great carry gun but not fun at the range. It hurts my middle finger to shoot it more than 20 rounds. It is accurate and reliable.

What grips do you have on it? Grips can make a huge difference with J-Frames.

I was thinking the same thing. Nice gun though. I almost forgot I have a Ruger SP101 in .357. It’s a nice gun but it hurts to shoot it, which is probably why it’s been at my brothers hunt camp for the past 10 or more years and I forgot all about it.

As a deep concealed ankle gun, S&W M&P340 with hogue bantum grips, Hornady Critical Defense 357’s and a Galco Ankle Glove.

The grips that came with the gun. I am 6’02 with a slender build. My hands are probably avg size. This pistol is just small and digs into my middle finger. I still love it though. I just don’t shoot it much.

I no longer carry my revolver as every mop headed mope here in Atlanta has a goddammed machine gun.

I just posted in the Two Favorite Guns thread that I’ve been carrying Glocks. With warmer weather coming up I’ll probably start tossing my 642 or 640-3 in a Mika pocket holster or IWB. Maybe even my Colt 3” King Cobra in a Galco Stow n Go.

The revived thread was timely; my 3" Colt King Cobra went along for the ride with me this morning. Rem. 125gr. 38+P Golden Sabers. 24 of them.

Those are the ones that are carried the most often. I have a Kimber K6S that has a holster and have carried a Ruger SP101 3” but that particular gun was sold off.

What grips came with the gun? Factory J-Frames had several options. I'm 6'5" with relatively long, thin hands. The factory rubber boot grips pictured in my post higher up on this page work well for me. I almost gave up on the J-Frames at one point because I was trying to use a thumbs-forward semi-auto type grip technique, and the cylinder release thumbpiece was beating up the side of my thumb.

Through trial and error I adjusted my grip to find something that works for me. I get the web of my right hand high up in the backstrap and my trigger finger engages the trigger right at the outermost (first distal) joint. I cross my left thumb over the back of my right hand and that kind of locks everything in and keeps my digits away from the cylinder/forcing cone gap and the sharp edges of the thumbpiece.

What is that chambered in? I’m not super familiar with the wheel guns.

Also, what grips are those, and how do you like them with hot bear loads? I’d like something along those lines for my .44 woods gun.

Ruger GP101 in 9mm for formal wear.

Kind of interesting you revived this thread. Since my original reply, I've changed my habits. I don't think I've pocket carried either my 640 or 642 since my original response. I've been carrying my 3" GP100 in 10mm quite a bit. Very comfortable and easy to carry in an El Paso Saddlery pancake holster. The moon clips make it very easy to change loads from hardcast to hollow points when traveling and the environment changes. Still looking for a better way of carrying additional reloads in moon clips rather than just throwing them in the cargo pocket on pants.

The other revolver that's had a lot of time in the carry rotation is a Smith 329. Not fun to shoot, but the light weight for carry makes it a go to especially when humping a backpack full of camera gear. Yes, it is possible to conceal a 4" N-frame revolver. Mernickle makes a great cross draw holster that has become on of my favorite holsters. It has a rake that is more near horizontal than vertical making it easier to conceal. Also makes it more accessible while driving. I've also got a chest holster, s strong side and a Safepacker that I've been known to carry it in.

That's a 329PD in .44 Magnum. It's brutal to shoot, even with light loads, but at 24oz it's awesome to carry. The grips are an eBay find from a guy in Thailand who makes copies of hard to find factory S&W grips. They were a copy of the "bantam" style grips, and had finger grooves which I sanded off. They are horrifically painful to shoot, but allow the gun to fit in my chest carry rig, which is a Hill People Gear medium kit bag.

The gun is currently wearing a set of hacked up rubber Pachmayr DiamondPro grips that have a padded backstrap and make it a little less punishing to shoot. It's still very much a handful, but at least I don't feel like I'm shutting my hand in a car door every time I pull the trigger. And having cut them down, they do fit into my kit bag, just barely. Neither set is exactly what I want, but between the two I can cover most of my needs.

The gun also came with two sets of factory grips...rubber that were to long and too narrow, and wood ones made by Altmont that in typical Altmont fashion are covered in sharp 90 degree corners. I'm not even willing to try those on this gun, as I'm sure they'd draw blood.

You definitely do! I've been enjoying playing with the 329, but if I could only keep one it would be the 69. It's heavier, but far nicer to shoot, and the trimmer profile makes it easier to conceal. It's also much easier to maintain than the 329. I am willing to shoot some nasty lead stuff through my 69 because I can get really aggressive with chamber brushes and scrub it out. I only shoot jacketed through the 69 because I'm not willing to do that to the Titanium cylinder
