I always loved the 3913, but not as much as my HK P7M8.

DA/SA, but this model uses a single-sided safety.
Thanks....still interested in a DAO model.
The 3953 is the DAO equivalent to the 3913s being discussed here.

I really liked the idea of that pistol series and bought a double-stack 6906 and carried it for a while for off-duty/backup.
As much as I liked that pistol, the gritty and long DA pull caused me to eventually sell it.

I love my 3rd gen Smiths but fuck that guy at S&W who came up with their numbering system. At one point it seemed to make sense and then it became gibberish to me.
I have a couple 3913’s and 6906’s. I love those guns. The triggers aren’t great but they just seem solid.
I sure wish they would make another TDA metal gun like these. Like a CSX but not SA.

I agree, when I first saw the CSX, I thought I really hope they make it DA/SA. I know the Shield and Shield plus are cheaper to produce and probably a “better” choice, but I’d be in line for a DA/SA CSX pretty damn quick.

Yeah, they started out with a coherent system, and then began deviating from it with exceptions, and it started to fall apart into an inconsistent mess.

I have a soft spot for the 3rd Gen pistols. They appear in a lot of TV and movies from the 1990s. Regretfully, I sold my 3913 and a couple of 5946s but I still have
3906 (DA/SA; a bit uncommon, large single-stack with a steel frame
3953 (DAO)
CS9D (DAO)

Thanks Rogue...I've got my eye on one now but not many out there.

Those are nice little guns, and getting the mags makes the deal a very good one.
If they weren't marked "Ladysmith," they would have sold some multiple of the number they sold. Handsome guns, too.

I sold my 3913 and kept the 3953 because it seemed more unique to me.
I’m not sure if you’re aware but the 3953 is not a standard DAO. The hammer sits at a half-cock position. It makes for a decent trigger pull but it does not have second strike capability. The slide must be racked to reset the hammer if there is a failure to fire. The 5946s and others have the same system but not all models do. My CS9D is a true DAO.
Thanks. I made it for my brother when he had some questions. I’d like to do a supplement and look inside a striker fired pistol. I have an old Colt 1908 Vest Pocket that would be perfect to display the concept.
The 3913 series and its similar size cousins (3914, 3953. etc) are a great platform. For a year or two S&W made the 3913TSW with a shorter grip (7 round mag) and no rail. It's my favorite version:

The early pre-rail 3913TSW with the shorter grip was the bees knees of carry guns at its time.
The big downside to that iteration nowadays is that the 7 round magazines (shared with the CS9) are even tougher to find than the standard 8 round 3913 magazines.
