A friend pulled a P226 .40 out of his safe, that he had bought from the Sheriffs dept. several years ago. From having stored it in a leather holster, it had white corrosion on the front of the trigger guard, I picked at it with my thumb nail and a large section of the guard just fell away. The only thing i could figure out was there was some sort of reaction between the frame and the retaining stud/screw in the holster. I told him that's why I don't store firearms in leather, it's a shame because this thing was never issued, not a mark on it.[FLASH_VIDEO] [/FLASH_VIDEO]

there are a number of cpo guns that had been refinished.

Some hold up fairly well,

Others do not.

This pistol was in new condition, the white corrosion had eaten through the front of the trigger guard

To the point of chunk of the trigger guard just falling off due to corrosion?

I found this discussion:

"All chrome tanned leathers retain chemical salts from the tanning process. Those salts will, with long-term exposure, have an effect on finished steel. Not only will it cause corrosion on blued steel, I have seen it cause what I call "freckling" on stainless steel guns.

"Stainless steel" is a marketing term, describing steel alloys having higher content of chromium, nickle, etc. The metal is far more resistant to corrosion than other alloys, but is not rust proof.

"I advise my customers to never store a handgun in any holster or leather case, as all leather will attract and hold moisture. Also, it is a good idea to get into the habit of removing the handgun from the holster overnight, wiping it down with a cloth treated with oil or silicone, and leave the holster in an area with good air flow to wick away any residual moisture."

Was the retaining screw brass? If so, it could definitely be a reaction between brass and the aluminum frame. Add in the electrolytic environment of tanned leather, and you have perfect conditions for galvanic corrosion.

I took his statement to mean the coating came off.

If the actual trigger guard broke away, that is something else entirely.

He made contradictory statements. One that it was a police trade in, and later new.

I think it was a refurb.

Well, he said it was never issued, so I took it as having been purchased new by the sheriff department, but not actually issued to an officer. So a new gun sat in a holster inside safes for however many years.

OP, maybe we could help you out more if you could post a pic of the damage?

His first statement sounds like the finish came off, you're right. But his second statement sounds like the front part of the trigger guard actually broke off. Strange.

I don't think there was any contradiction. There was no trade-in. Said it was bought from the Sheriff department, was never issued, so was in new condition. Refurbished implies it has gone back to factory to be CPO'ed. Nothing he said hinted that was the case.

Maybe, but a refurb gun would almost look new,and quite a few people think all referbs are trade ins.

I would need to see pictures to really understand what has gone on.

Rather than P226, a better title would be something like "P226 corrosion from leather holster".

For a screw to have enough salt content to deteriorate a part of a firearm would take quite some time and quite some salt.

It sure sounds like actual metal flaked off, but man, that would require some outside circumstances.

Something like it took a ride to the beach and came back, holstered, got bleach spilled on it, then more chlorine, then some more salt.

Aint nobody making maple cured holsters with that much salt in em.

Something happened to make actual metal deteriorate.

Only thing I can think of happening that quick is stainless is chlorine/bleach.

In other words...DAFUQ them pics at?
