I am a long time Sig owner but have been buying HK's and Glocks for the last few years. Also have been buying early stainless Smith revolvers. My last (and only) issued handgun was a WG nickel P228. My department was contemplating issuing Sigs. I even attended a Sig police armorers school. I left the department and they now issue Glocks.

My last 228 was sold about two years ago. I have missed it badly. I sold it in 90% + condition for $ 500. Prices recently locally seem to be closer to $ 1000 so I have not replaced it.

Saturday I impulse bought a P229 Elite 40. I paid $655 OTD for an ANIB model. I don't like the 40 caliber but I still have a couple of thousand rounds for it.

I have said all that to ask this Should I keep or sell? If I keep I will end up spending a lot of money for magazines and finding the original factory grips. I would also consider buying parts to convert it to 9 mm. (Do the 9 conversions work well with a Sig?)

Or should I sell and find a 9mm 228 or 229?

Keep it.
If u don't like .40 convert to 9mm if you can find the slide/barrel combo and mags.
It is an easy MOD

I got a set of grips I'd part with.

I have a Bar-Sto conversion barrel for mine and just picked up some P229-1 magazines for it. Reportedly, this combo is all that is needed for a 40-9 conversion. I hope to test it out in the next week or two.

I'd keep it as SIG isn't making P229s right now. I doubt you'd lose money on it if you held on and then decided to sell at a later date.

Also consider a 357 Sig barrel.

If you have that many rounds of 40s can you really go wrong if keeping it?

I recommend keeping it because Elite models are very hard to come by. Get a 9mm or 357 SIG barrel for it and have fun. Bar Sto barrels are the cat’s meow.

To me, there are no reasons to keep a gun I don't like. Heck, I even sell guns I like. No regrets.

You've answered your own question.

"I don't like the 40 caliber but I still have a couple of thousand rounds for it."

Sell the gun and the ammo. Buy something you like.

I have regretted every handgun that I have sold at one time or another, so I say keep it if funds allow.

You should generally go where your heart and mind tells you to go, but frankly I enjoy shooting my .40 P229. It's a relatively soft shooter for the caliber. I'd recommend trying it out first before making that decision to move on, but at least you will do very well selling off the ammo these days for a profit and should break even on the SIG if you sell wisely.

Just an update . I did sell the Elite on Saturday. I found an ANIB older P228. Seller wanted $ 800 out the door. When I said too high, he replied "make an offer". I offered $700.He came down to $ 775 but no further. I left without it.

Now I wished I had picked it up.

I wasn’t always this way, but this is where I’m at now. Life’s too short to not to get what you want, if it’s within your means to do so.

I just traded for a used P229 German Frame. (It was a gun I previously owned and traded to get it back...)

I agree with the sentiment about the .40...definitely not my favorite rounds. But in todays world its good to have guns in various calibers...you just never know whats available. For a .40 you can't beat the Sig. They're built like tanks.
