^^^ This one?

If so, it's loosely based on the Marine Corps MEUSOC M45's

The higher end Units in the Corps wanted a solid shooting handgun that was a .45. This is what they ended up with.

In the early years, the Marine Corps Armorers cobbled together frames and slides, custom fit barrels, barrel bushings, links, link pins, recoil springs and guide rods, ambi-safeties, sights, triggers... Tighter tolerances between the slide and frame, better lock-up. Built to take some abuse from guys who went "Down Range" on a regular basis. A lot of the input for the MEUSOC 45's came from the end users.

Armorers from the Marine Corps Precision Marksmanship Unit in Quantico put them together- The same Unit that puts together the Marine Corps Sniper Rifles, Custom Rifles and pistols for the Marines on the Marksmanship team (bullseye shooters). Think more "Craftsmen" and "Artists" vs "Monkey with a hammer and a dremel".

Eventually the Marines got Springfield Slides and Frames, and still custom fit the internals with high end parts. Eventually (2010-2015 ish) Colt started manufacturing them, and got the Marine Corps Contract.

I never shot the Colt, but I've put my fair share of rounds through the Springfields, and from my personal experience, what a GREAT 1911!!! Runs like a sewing machine!

Now, If you're really cool, you toss a lanyard on it.
Buy me a few drinks, and I'll tell you the only PROPER way to... "acquire" one Wink

Owned one gave perfectly good performance- 100% reliable, typical “ production gun” level accuracy.
Somewhat surprising they are an 80 series ( firing pin safety) gun

As I understand it there were several versions:
The USMC issue guns were production line guns NOT custom shop. One of the problems with the MEUSOC guns was no one at unit level was qualified to fix them if they broke, they were evacuated back to quantico for repair.
Standard production gun- initially were marked M45A1 USMC but the Marines complained Colt had not gotten permission to put USMC on the guns so they changed to M45A1 followed by 3 stars.
There were both custom shop and production USMC marked guns at first.
The custom shop guns came in a pelican case with test target
First guns were cerakote and finish wore fast in service
Colt agreed to exchange those in USMC service with a newer ion bond finish
( ion bond transitioned in civilian production guns also)
So there were the early UsMC marked guns both production and custom shop, and the very rare x out guns- guns the USMC traded back to colt for replacement, and colt released to the civilian market with the USMC mark crossed out and letters of authenticity confirming the gun was genuine USMC issue.
Then the later 3 stars marked production and custom shop in cerakote , then later custom shop and production 3 star marked ion bond guns.
There were some sort of commemorative guns made for I think the marine corps league or simper fi fund.
Colt even did a number of guns exactly the same gun with different color finishes here and there. Overall there are about a dozen variations of this gun out there.

From a practical perspective while a good gun the thicker than standard accessory rail prevents most holsters designed for a railed 1911 from fitting. I ended up having a local leather craftsman custom make me a holster for mine, ( this was a long while back, holster may not be an issue these days)
Unless you have a thing for the USMC / Colt lineage, they don’t do anything better than any other quality similar pattern 1911.
With the adoption of the sig M17/18 series, the 45’s were phased out of MEUSOC and raider units. The most recent thing I have seen ( couple years ago) is some swat teams on Marine bases were using them.
