I am interested in mounting a (Sig) ROMEO1PRO red dot on my older P226. Given that the pistol is 25 years old, and I do not want to machine the slide, a dovetail-mounted adapter seems to be the way to go. I have a dovetail-mounted red eye on my Ruger MarkII and it’s solid and reliable. There seem to be a few options for dovetail adapter plates for 226s out there. Can anyone recommend the best one? TIA

I just went the route of buying the whole new slide assembly, already RDO cut, from Sig and putting it on the gun. Saved the original slide, so it can go back to that configuration anytime you want.

I hate how high these end up being and the difficulty of having any backup sights. And I would double check the footprint of the Sig to make sure you can find a mount for it.
Myself I picked the strategy of buying a new optics cut slide.

Buy a new Slide from Sig or on the net. I bought one with a Red dot for under $450. Kept the old slide of course. The one I bought came with higher sights that are useable through the optics window.

OP here. For those who suggested buying a new slide, there's a complication I didn’t initially mention: this is a .357 SIG, and there are no pre-cut slides available for that caliber.

In the end, I went with the EGW recommendation and picked up a new Holosun 407K to go with it. There simply aren't any dovetail mounts that fit a ROMEO1PRO on a P226 dovetail—none, ZERO. That’s the big issue with the ROMEO1PRO: it uses a proprietary footprint that makes it a real outlier.

Isnt that just a Delta Point Pro footprint? Its a pretty standard footprint with many mounting options. Unless I'm mistaken.

To the OP .40 cal slides are dirt cheap and milling is pretty inexpensive so it should not be very expensive to get a slide mounted optic when you decide that the optic on the dovetail isn't the greatest setup...

Its predecessor, the Romeo 1, used a proprietary footprint.

But the Romeo 1 Pro uses the Delta Point Pro footprint. (Hence the Pro in the name.)

The newest Romeo X Pro likewise uses the DPP footprint. (And thus retains the Pro nomenclature.)

Not sure what that means practically but I think it means it might not work on some specific mounts even though they are DPP which is what I hoped to convey in my original post. I don't know if its a tiny warning or it means a large percentage don't work. I don't use Sig optics and I don't use the DPP footprint so I defer to others on this issue of the severity if one was to purchase this optic.

I thought so too after asking ChatGPT, but the EGW rep told me they weren't the same, and he certainly knows better than me. So much for AI.

I sent an email to Sig New Hampshire asking whether the ROMEO1PRO and DeltaPoint Pro shared the same footprint. Their answer:

"Yes, the DPP footprint is the same as the R1P footprint."

OK but at the same time they publish a disclaimer on their website that says "maybe".

Check the classified section. There is a Romeo 1 that might meet your needs. Has all the mounting plates for classic Sigs.

Be aware that early red dot sights inserted into the rear dovetail damaged slides because of their weight and the forces encountered during recoil.

I own one of Sig's original kit that includes the Romeo 1 Miniature Reflex Sight with Handgun Adapter Pack and Handgun Mounting Kit. It has 12 plates that replaces the rear sight for mounting.

If you want to see what the kit looks like, I found an ad on Guns America. Crazy price, whoever sold it must not have realized the Red Dot on it's own was worth a lot more than their asking price:
