J, I've still got the first Handgun I ever bought--1974 S&W Model 19 Four-incher--Somewhat the worse for wear, it still puts 'em where I aim it & it hasn't let me down yet... Also have a Six-inch Hi Standard Sentinel Deluxe that was my Mom's "Nightstand Gun" from about '59 or '60 until she passed away in 2002--I shot it a BUNCH growing up and it would be the LAST GUN I'd give up if it ever comes to that... |

The Great Equalizer

| The first firearm that I ever bought was a 6" Nickel Model 27 Smith & Wesson It is in the upper right of this old photo of 6 shot Model 27s I bought it in 1978 and still own and shoot it to this day The firearm that has the most ammunition through is a 6" blue Smith & Wesson 22 Masterpiece that was manufactured 1953. I think that I got it in the mid 80s. For more then 30 years now, this is he firearm that I start novice shooter on. It is also the firearm that I have been using in the Home Firearms Safety course that I have been teaching for about the same length of time. I could predict how much ammunition has been fired in this old Lady, but the number is HUGE. I need to pull it out and do a photo

| An Italian Beretta 92f that was made in 1987 and I bought used in 1999. I’ve swapped springs and the locking block over the years and I recently did a G conversion. My second longest serving handgun is a KE P228.

| I have a Glock 19 Gen 2 that I was issued as a new reserve officer in 2003. The small PD I worked for at the time obtained it via a program from Phoenix PD, where they would sell property room guns to agencies for a buck.
I carried the gun for about three years, first as a duty gun, then as an off duty gun, until moving on to other guns. When the PD decided that it was time to get rid of the gun, I bought it. I probably last shot it in 2008 or 2009 but I do take it out and dry fire it occasionally.
I've always wondered how Phoenix PD came to have the gun. It's likely a crime gun, so it's amusing to me that it became a police duty gun.
In terms of "continuous service", I've got a S&W 642 that has lived in my left pants pocket as an on-duty backup since 2006. The gun currently gets shot 50 rounds a year to qualify. All of the hard edges have been rubbed shiny. It's on its second or third set of grips. The rubber ones get smooth and eventually the hardware gets rusty from sweat. I'll probably try G10 next time. |

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.
| I have my father's .22 H&R 9 shot revolver that he believe he bought before I was born. I starting shooting it sometime before age 10. First gun I ever shot. I'll be 72 this coming June.

| The model that I've owned the longest: Glock 19. Except for a 6 month period when I foolishly let my original Gen2 get away, I've had at least one over every year that I've owned a handgun. The specific handguns that I've now owned the longest: SIG P229/Browning Buck Mark, bought on the same day. Both became starting points in leading me down their respective rabbit holes to further accumulation of firearms from their respective brands, in all sorts of multiple types and vintages.

| My longest was my first 226 that I bought in mid 90's. Back then I was shooting IDPA so it got a lot of rounds run it. The only thing I did to it was replace the springs once and clean it after each range use. Sold it a friend of mine a couple of years ago. He asked how me rounds I'd put through it and I figured up I'd run north of 70,000. He is still using it without a problem.
