So what self defense ammo do you use in your short-barreled pistol like the 938? I’m currently using Hornady Critical Defense. I’m an old guy with arthritic hands, and need somewhat mild loads for practice. Not so much for self defense. I’ll use what’s best for that. Thanks

If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

Any of the quality brands that cycle in your gun will work fine. There are so many other more important things (from a ballistic standpoint) that seem to influence the outcome that you can't predict. The clothes a person is wearing, the place and angle the bullet hits, bone, muscle, weird deflections, objects on and off the person, etc. That's why you see a person struck by one stray bullet and killed and another hit by ten rounds in a police shootout and still functioning. I suspect way too much thinking goes into this subject.
I carry the Sig Elite Performance V Crown 124 gr. HP in my 938 and they seem to perform very well.
I personally think that any high quality defensive ammo will do the job that it's intended to do. Like 220-9er stated, you can over think this and make it more complicated than it is in reality.

I carry a similar gun, the Kimber Micro 9 and I carry it with Winchester Defense 147gr, and practice with both the Winchester Train as well as WallyWorld 115gr RN ammo.
