Shopping for CCW pistol Login/Join

Hello, this is my first post.
I went early shopping today for a CCW pistol and was looking at the CZ-75 compact H&K compact Sig P320 California with thumb safety and the Sig SP2022. I own a P226 and love it, but I wish I had purchased the P229. I also own a Sig P320-X5, which is out getting a trigger job done for IDPA Carry Optics. Anyway, I have small hands and sort fingers, and the P320 and SP2022 felt great in my hands, I like the idea of a DA\SA or safety because I will mostly carry appendix carry but sometimes at the four o'clock position. I don't want to get too small of a pistol. Any suggestions I would like to hear from others?

If you're set on DA/SA, the PX4 Storm Compact isn't a bad choice.

You may want to try a 365 X, XL or even the Macro. I have all three and love them. They are available with MS. I love my 226 and 229, but I carry the 365s. I have Wilson Combat grips on all of mine which I prefer to the stock ones. If you like your 320 you most likely will like the 365 series.

The CZ P-07 is a real gem. Also the PCR pr P01 if you prefer an aluminum frame over polymer.

I'll second that. VERY underrated pistol.

Walther PDP F-Series. Don't let the 'F' dissuade you, just bad advertising.

Another vote for the PX4, specifically the Langdon Tactical PX4 Compact Carry. Also another vote for the P365 but use it with a Wilson Combat grip module.

You guys need to stop telling everybody about the PX4 compact until I can get my hands on one! People are going to figure out the secret and they'll get expensive! Big Grin

I traded away my full-size PX4 a couple of weeks ago because I found a deal on something else, and ever since I got it I've been wishing it was a compact to make it easier to carry. I figured I'd let that one go and shop for a compact to replace it. They're seriously great guns!

I have or have had all of these, my favorite the PCR. Because these all use de-cocking levers, the hammer is at about one-third cock when at rest, which reduces the reach to the DA trigger. The P-07 already has a slender grip; the others need thin, flat-sided grips added to slim them down. These are about as slim as a DA/SA can get that I have personally tried. The 75 Compact steel-frame has a very long trigger reach, and also must have the hammer manually lowered after chambering a round to put it in that condition.

If you need it still slimmer, the SIG P365 (in either "standard" form or the slightly larger XL) would be a good choice.

SP2022. I don't know if I'd carry mine appendix but iwi 4 o'clock no problem. CZ Compact is a hell of a gun, mags aren't too bad and after you've saved up for awhile, the Kadet 22lr conversion and a couple mags makes a good kit. I assume this is also a Roster issue? The IWI Masada Slim 9 seems like a big brother to my Ruger LC9s Pro more than the Max-9. So, many new and older choices these days. Good luck and Welcome.

I only have one comment and that is that Sig has a high bore axis. The CZ's have a low bore axis. You'll need to adjust for the difference. Maybe stick with a Sig?

I have men's size Large hands and the span from thumb tip to little finger tip is 9 inches. I also have an original edition P229 Elite Stainless. With the OEM Rosewood grips I had to go so far sidesaddle on the gun that it was a bit worrisome to shoot. So I put a set of standard Hogue grips on it and it's noticeably less hand filling but I still have to side saddle the grip a bit. What fits me well is my Hogue grip equipped P239-40's. I will also note that 1911 pistols fit me perfectly. If you have smallish hands you do NOT want a P229.

Suggestion for small compact carry guns. I like my P239 a lot but it's on the heavy side and will not work in a pocket. For Pocket carry I have two choices, the Ruger LC9S Pro or the Sig P365.

The trigger on the Ruger is pretty decent for a striker fired pistol, as in a goodly bit of pre-travel with a very short bit of Sear Creep. The trigger on my P365 is not very good, lots of friction in the pre-travel that feels like dragging a stick thru mud and a rather mushy break. The big plus for the P365 is that it carry's 10 in a magazine with 12 as an option and it is shootable even with that muddy trigger. I have also found it to be 100% reliable RN or Hollow point ammo.

Note, for me both the Ruger LC9S and P365 have sights that are regulated for 147 grain ammo, with that weight they both shoot exactly to the POA. With 115 grain loads they'll shoot about 2 inches low at 30 feet so I make a 3 dot triangle of the sight dots to get them on the POA. BTW, the Sig "X-Ray" sights are awful, you cannot see the rear dots at an indoor range and the tritium tubes i nthe sights are tiny. Yeah, I've been really spoiled by the night sites that came on my P239 in 2008 and they are still much brighter than the ones on my P365.

I've stopped counting.

OP is from CA, not a free state. So, keep in mind that there are unapproved pistols, when making your recommendations.

P365CA. Once you get rid of the MDM, you can use any other grip modules and can swap parts to make it an XL or Macro if desired.

Don't sleep on an HK P2000 or P2000sk. HK is doing a $200 magazine promo through the end of March on the P30, VP9, and P2000 pistols.
