Replacing Night Sight inserts on a P-229
Anybody know how to do it?

My night sights are still bright, but I want to change the front from green to orange.

How easy is it? What tools do I need, where do I get them and the orange insert?

Thanks in advance

First, you shouldn't be fooling with the slightly radioactive "lamps" that provide illumination for Tritium night sights.
Leave that step to the manufacturers.

It is my understanding that for servicing all night sights except for Trijicon, you take the old night sights off the slide with a sight drifting tool/press and install new night sights of your choice.
With Trijicon, you ship them your slide and they can install new "lamps" in your existing sights.

Might be easier just to order a new front sight.
I just ordered XS sights for my Gen 6 19. $64.

Yep. Find one you like that's the correct size, drift the old one out and drift the new one on. The only re-lamping I've heard of being done is on guns with fixed (non-dovetailed) sights like the older Beretta 92s, and that's done by the vendor not something that you'd do yourself.

Yep, either send the slide in to the manufacturer or order a new front sight.

Looks like I'm going to stick with green.

12131, do you know if Sig would still do this if I sent the slide to them? I suspect it would be less-than-cheap and take a while, but I could ask them. Don't even know if they can do another color.

I had some orange front, white rear sights installed on my G-19 Gen 5, and although I like the combo, it was a PITA getting them adjusted, and they're still not right, so I'm not interested in changing the whole sight on my Sig.

Thanks for the quick responses, everyone.

SIG will put in new night sights, and yes, it would be a little pricey. That simple service would be a week or less. Not sure what colors they have.

You could ask Trijicon to relamp, if your original sight is theirs.

The third option, like I said, is to buy one and DIY. That’s what I would do, since I have the SIG sight pusher.

Current sights are original Sigs, probably relamped as the pistol was a police trade-in, rebuilt by Sig, then sold to another Forum member I bought it from some years back.

I'll check Sig's website for availability and price, seems the only way for me to go. I'll post what I find and what I decide.

Again, thanks everybody!

Doesn't Sig usually offer a sale on their Sig Service Package around Father's Day? The SSP includes replacement night sights.

Couldn't do much yesterday due to weather concerns, but a quick look at Sig's website, I only see green inserts. I'll get back to it this afternoon, weather permitting (power outage and surge concerns).

On the other hand, it's good to know that Sig will still service the P-229, including night sights.

My 229 sights faded a couple of years ago. I had a sight pusher and replaced them with Ameriglo green. Pretty easy to do.

My experience with replacing the sights on my G-19 was not very good. Being in IL, good gunsmiths are virtually non-existent, and the mediocre one I found couldn't get them centered. Ranges being rare around here, too (DeKalb County) it took me two trips to the smith and two trips to the range to get them approximately right, then a member here loaned me his sight tool which I took to the range and used to get the sights closer, but not perfect by the time the range closed for the week.

I'll say, though, that the Ameriglo sights I picked up were the right choice for the Glock, and one of the reasons I'm looking for an orange front insert.

Just to be sure, are you looking for a tritium front sight that glows green or orange ? Or are you looking for a front where the tritium glows green and is surrounded with an orange ring that doesn’t glow? If the later, Ameriglo lists the Trooper sight sets in orange or green front for 120.00. You just have to figure out the number of the tights you have now (6 or 8). I’ve used a couple dozen of these sights on my Glocks for years.

I also can't tell if he is looking for an orange Tritium lamp or a green Tritium lamp within an orange-painted ring.

Orange lamp.

I haven't had my Glock out in the dark for a while, so I waited until this evening to see exactly what's on it, still can't tell except that it's tiny and maybe orange with an orange ring.

But for the Sig, I want an orange lamp, the size of the original insert in the stock Sig Night Sight.

Sorry this wasn't clear before.

I just put some Trijicon Bright & Toughs on my M11-A1 last week. I used a hammer and punch for the front sight and a pusher tool for the rear. Easy peasy. I have one more set for sale, but it's green front and rear.

I picked up one of those IDF surplus 228. It’s well used. Was looking at SIGs rebuild service for an entire spring replacement and adding night sights at same time I think it was $119

If those are SIGlites, that sounds like a decent deal. If Trijicons, then a smoking deal. The spring kits have gotten a lot more expensive.

I watched a couple videos on the IDF 228's, they sell quick. How much are they going for now, do you know? I sure don't need one to carry, got several Glocks, but I was thinking one for cheap practice would be an idea.

Pics would be nice, too!
