I recently retired from an agency where policy allowed me to carry a P226. Like an idiot, after a while I went back in, to a smallish agency that was striker fired only, full stop, the brand really isn't relevant. The boss not being totally unreasonable, I wrote up a request, included documentation, and lo and behold I'm back to my P226. If you ever see an agency photo and there is a pistol that doesn't match the others, that's me. I think it's nice that they recognized a couple decades of use and training and decided not to pound a square peg into a round hole. Thanks for reading.

Cool that your department recognizes experience over protocol. Even though I'm very much a Glock guy, I'd always gotten a kick seeing those few Seattle PD officers bucking the trend of Plastic Fantastic with their classic SIGs and even .357 revolvers. However with the politics of the city's government these days, most of them have moved on or retired. -MG

While awesome and I am a hammer fired troglodyte myself ,wouldn’t you want gun/mag/training compatibility with your fellow officers? In a pinch I know I would want to be able to source a mag if needed from another responder. I mean I realize that is a fairly unlikely scenario but not unheard of either. "Guns are tools. When our agency discussed allowing weapon of choice (within set parameters), that issue was raised. No one could find a documented incident where that occurred. It was also raised that standard patrol load out was 2 spare mags. If an incident was that bad, where officers had run out of ammo, the chances of officers giving up their last magazine were in reality probably pretty slim. An unfortunate reality. Tony

Best pistol ever made IMO. How about a pic of your duty belt set up?

Can you reference an actual incident? I’ve always heard this argument, but I’ve never found an actual occurrence of this happening in U.S. civilian law enforcement.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
If another cop is such a bad shot that he hasn't been able to solve his problem with 3 mags, giving him one of mine seems like a poor use of ammo. Everybody is probably better off if somebody else handles the shooting from that point forward...

I have to agree with you on the P226. The best OWB duty pistol.

There was a discussion of this over on Pistol Forum earlier this year and I believe a couple guys brought up incidents where this happened. I believe one was in the San Francisco area. Even if there are a handful of incidents in the last 30 years, there are thousands and thousands of shootings where magazine interchangeability was not a factor. I would VASTLY prefer a person have a gun that they shoot better than have one they can feed with somebody else's magazines when they use all of theirs.

I go with the above line of thought. We had that argument thrown at us regarding allowing choice in duty pistols over and over, an my response was always “in what bizzaro world do you live where the chance of me giving away ammunition in the middle of a gunfight exists?” Bill R

My example was "So somebody sprays and prays then expects me to give them my ammo?" Tony

I have never found a case where an officer had to him more mags off another cop. Urban legend. Most guys I know carry 3 pistol mags on their vests and one in their gun. Some even carry a rifle mag on their vests. Then there is the mag in the carbine and one in their war bag. Then there is the additional 2 pistol mags and rifle mag in the go-bag in the back of the cruisers. I still carry 2 pistol mags on my vest but, the mags on my vest and in my G17 have the Glock +2 mag extensions. I also carry a 20 round AR mag in my vest.

my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives |
I was told that it did happen in a large west coast agency at a bank robbery 29 years ago. I was also told that the individual donating their magazines had not fired a single shot before their partner went empty. Basically, if your guy isn’t firing, he is either dead or has cratered. Either way, their gun is available with the mags. ***************************** "I don't own the night, I only operate a small franchise" - Author unknown
