I shot 3 pistols yesterday. A HK VP9SK a Sig 365 and a Sig365XL. The 365XL is my EDC. All functioned well until I tried some Win steel case. The HK locked up with a spent case in the chamber that had to be removed with a wooden dowel. The Sigs feed and ejected perfectly. All were filthy after 50 rounds except for the HK which jammed on the 3rd round. 2 Questions is this to be expected from steel case and could there be any damage to my HK? Of course no more steel for me. I shot it only because it was all that was available.

Welcome to the forum. It is doubtful that steel case ammo will hurt your HK.

You’ll find that steel cases ammo is a very passionate topic around here.

They say that steel ammo is harder to extract and dirty. Big Grin The HK should be ok.

If you were shooting Winchester USA Forged steel case ammo, the reviews I've read on it have been very mixed. A lot of reviews posted similar experiences to what you had: FTF, FTE, stuck casings, etc.

See for yourself:

Ammo in other than brass (i.e., steel and aluminum) functions fine in a lot of guns, but some individual guns don't like it. For example, in a CZ pistol I used to have, it fed, fired and shucked brass 100%, but failed to eject four times within a single box of aluminum Blazer. I never had trouble with Blazer aluminum in other guns. Obviously, your HK doesn't like steel, so keep it out of that gun. As for the dirty stinky powder residue, this is something I've noticed as well, but the case material, in and of itself, shouldn't have anything to do with it. I don't know what the deal is with that.
