Do I need a P227?
August 05, 2025, 12:50 PM
92fstechDo I need a P227?
I know this is the wrong place to ask this, but I'm going to do it anyway.
I have an opportunity to buy a P227 at a fair price. I like the idea of the gun, but I'm not sure I need it, and it'll probably spend most of its life in the safe. I already have a P245 and a P220 Compact that are much better carry options if I want a .45, and I have a P226 to scratch that Sig DA/SA full-size itch on the range.
Ultimately, I want it, but don't know what I'd use it for. I have the cash, but I'm not made of money and buying it would mean foregoing something else... probably something I'd use more.
What says the forum? Can anybody make a practical use-case for the P227 given the information above?

cslingerLook I don’t know you but from your posts I feel like you may be a little bit like me.
So do you need a P227. No absolutely not.
Should you buy a P227? Hell yes what are you waiting for man.

. It’s an interesting gun, in the “Lords Caliber” and the fact it is a bit of a footnote in handgun history makes it so much cooler. Besides this is before SIG’s shake awake tech was implemented.

. It may not be a “To hell and back” era gun” but it’s at least a To Detroit and back piece.

It's got an ISP logo on it, too.

But I've got a trip to Europe coming up and that cash would be a nice safety net for that. And If I don't have to use it over there then it might be enough to get me most of the way into a real fishing kayak when they go on sale in the fall. Or parts to replace a bunch of seals on my 400k mile Suburban before I try to drive it to AK next year. Or more likely, paying insurance premiums for my daughter when she starts driving in a few months, or the next appliance that breaks in the house. Adulting sucks

DanHNo, you do not NEED a P227? The question is do you WANT a P227 enough to spend the money...
August 05, 2025, 04:56 PM
92fstechI guess a better question is:
If you already had a P220 Compact and a P245, and then somehow also came into possession of a P227, what would you use it for?

If you are being practical, it's probably not worth the two extra rounds over a P220.

largebore1Yes because 10 rounds of .45 is always a good idea.

Europe will always be there, a used kayak is probably waiting for a good owner, your daughter will need insurance as long as she's living with you anyway.
400k miles on a Suburban is too much to risk a trip to Alaska.
I remember about 35 years ago, wanting a Smith & Wesson with the 3" bull barrel like the FBI gun, but thought it impractical and got a Mod 66 with 2-1/2" barrel and round butt. I rarely shoot it, and when I do I can't hit squat. I shoulda got the FBI gun.

.38supersigI didn't need a P227.
I sure as heck didn't need a P227 SAS.
Not even when I figured out a 2011 magazine could make it more fun.
Absolutely not... ever.

majbgdNo They are average pistols at best. Not Sigs best effort in my opinion.

Bulldog7972I own a 227 Carry and it’s probably the only gun I regret buying. It’s a good gun but it doesn’t do anything my other 45’s dont do. I like my G30S much more than I do my 227.It’s big, bigger than your recently acquired 229 and harder to conceal. Unless you really, really want that gun , don’t buy it. I’d put money on you eventually telling us it sits in your safe.

hrcjonI like the 227 and as part of my pseries collection own a couple, but here we are with an out of production gun, made in very small numbers, from a company that absolutely sucks on support of obsolete stuff and is about to be inundated with issues from the 320. Would not be my cup of tea as they say...
