I found this late 1980's Smith & Wesson Model 60 in the used case of my LGS. It didn't appear to have seen much actual use though it was filthy dirty and quite leaded. The original factory grips were long gone having been replaced with a set of Pachmayr oversized wrap arounds. The revolver had been recently traded by a local customer and apparently once spent some time in the custody of a NH police department. With a bit of good old fashioned horse trading, I was able to work out a deal for the gun and an NOS set of Hogue Bantam grips from their $5 bargain bin. I scrubbed the bore with Hoppes No. 9 and some copper Chore Boy stands woven on a bronze brush. Accuracy would almost certainly have suffered based upon the amount of lead I removed from the barrel. Attached is a photo of the revolver all cleaned up with the Hogue grips installed plus a shot of the police inventory tag on the box lid.

I have its blued sister, with similar Pachmayr grips (but still have the super slim wood grips too).
My wife's a great shot wit hit, but only in SA. The DA pull is well over 10lbs Eek

Hmmmm.... Might be a story there if Hinsdale PD will send you a copy of the report. The case number is right on the tag.

Yup, in order for them to dispose of it, the case is long done and closed, whatever it was.

Just file a records request for all documents pertaining to that case number. You can ask for the CAD records as well. Anything not able to be released would be redacted but unless it's a sex assault, juvenile crime or domestic violence, most of it will be in there still.

Of course, I see it's for safekeeping, so more likely it wasn't evidence and was maybe seized to "protect" it pending being reclaimed by the person, or next of kin. This is often done with collisions where the owner was transported to the hospital, death investigations where nobody was there to take safe possession of valuables, found property that went unclaimed and more.

Either way, I'd go for it. There is usually a nominal administrative fee for this service.

Nice score. I had an early 80's Model 60 and it was a great carry gun.

I sold one a few years ago and deeply regret it. One of the few guns I honestly regret selling.

Nice score! Always good to see a J-Frame getting some love, especially an older one that apparently has some history.

awesome guns. Not sure which dash number this is, but some of the earlier ones weren't rated for +P, as you likely already know.

Asking the PD about the gun might reveal it was to be destroyed after being forfeited. The expression "don't kick a sleeping dog" might apply.

My revolver is a Model 60 (no dash) with an unpinned barrel. It's unclear why the elimination of the barrel pin did not merit a "dash" model number.

Examination with a 5X loupe did not show any superfluous marks or engravings which are often present on a gun which had been held as evidence in a crime. Therefore, I suspect a less nefarious explanation. As an aside, I am currently awaiting the return of a stolen pistol which was recovered from a felon by the Philadelphia PD. After the resultant felony possession charge was tried at the federal level, I was notified by .gov that they had initiated forfeiture proceedings. If my experience recovering the gun so far is any indication, I would be quite surprised if a weapon scheduled for destruction could somehow "slip through the cracks", let alone be legally sold in another state. Perhaps evidence disposal protocols are more relaxed at the state level. For those interested, here's a link to my original post re: the ongoing journey to recover my property.

I'll have to dig mine out of the safe & see if mine's a no-dash or not.
I want to say it may be a -3 but it's been quite a while since it's been handled.
