Sounds like Marketing Stuff. It increases your confidence. Found this from 2010:

"Among the key features found on the Smith & Wesson SD9 and SD40 is the new Self Defense Trigger™ (SDT). Providing a smooth, consistent trigger pull from the first round to the last, the SDT design not only improves accuracy but also provides users with a heightened sense of confidence during the most stressful situations. My stepmom had a 9mm S&W that was of similar name, but can't recall exactly what it was, think it was SD9VE, so maybe the same model.
My dad said it had the worst trigger of any handgun he's shot before. It was replaced with a P365MS

The SD9VE trigger action isn't the greatest, but the predecessor SD9 Sigma was even worse. Gives the HK VP70 trigger a run for its money as the WOAT, at least for a 9mm. My opinion; YMMV.

As for the 'self defense trigger' marketing: given how notoriously bad the Sigma's action was (plus the whole Glock patent lawsuit debacle it spawned), it's not that much of a surprise that S&W's marketing people felt that it had to put some kind of positive spin on the Sigma's nearly identical looking replacement. Besides, few people bought S&W's bottom-rung pistols (Sigma or SD9VE) for anything other than it being a relatively cheap "defense" gun that way too many would never even bother to shoot a single round through.

We've had many, MANY customers of the SD9VE that unfortunately fit that description.

Bullshit marketing for a gun intended for people that aren't gun people.

It’s a name for a trigger when safe action trigger is already taken. Smile
