I'm going to ask the experts here a question.

Assuming both pistols are in the same condition, like new... what is the approximate asking price for each:

#1 standard black S&W M&P Shield in 9mm
#2 FN FNS -9 stainless rail, black body 9mm of course

Shields go for around $250.00 new so I would not pay anymore than $210.00 but it depends on where you live. The FNS-9, I could be thinking of the wrong model, but I thought it was discontinued. Just my 2 cents, I wouldn't waste your money on a discontinued model due to parts and magazine getting hard to find.FN makes a tough gun though.

I will say the Shield is a great gun and to me, the second gen pistol does nothing that the first can't do. I like the trigger and the fact that the grip is not heavily textured. It makes a big difference when you carry iwb.

Aren't the FNS the ones that can go off if you don't reset the trigger properly?

I would only take either of them used for nearly free, as they are so cheap new already.

Here is the explanation:

FN Service Bulletin: FNS Family of Pistols

FN recently became aware of a condition found within the FNS family of pistols that, under a very limited and unlikely set of circumstances, could cause the pistol to delay fire after the trigger is initially pulled. This condition can only be replicated in FNS pistols manufactured before February 12, 2017.

To our knowledge, this delayed-fire condition has only occurred in controlled testing environments; FN has not received any reports of delayed fire in the field under these unusual circumstances.

The condition may result after the FNS pistol slide is forced out of battery at a very small and specific distance, such as what might occur if the muzzle end of the slide is pressed against an object, and the trigger is pulled. The pistol functions as designed and does not fire. However, if the condition occurs, one of two scenarios may result: (1) if the trigger is held to the rear, the pistol could delay firing until the time when the slide moves back into battery, or (2) if force is removed from the trigger and the slide moves back into battery, the pistol could fire if jarred. In the unlikely event that scenario (2) occurs, keep the pistol pointed in a safe direction and rack the slide to the rear to reset the pistol. Avoid a “tap, rack, bang” clearing sequence.

While this condition is highly unlikely to occur in the normal course of operation, out of an abundance of caution FN is offering to substitute the striker in affected FNS-9, FNS-9 Longslide, FNS‑9 Compact, FNS-40, FNS-40 Longslide, and FNS-40 Compact pistols free of charge. Once the striker is replaced, the condition no longer occurs. Not all FNS serial numbers are affected by this condition. Therefore, FNS owners are asked to please use the serial number lookup found below. If the pistol is affected, further instruction on returning the FNS for service will be provided. Note: Please do not ship any affected product to FN until a FedEx label has been generated and sent. If the firearm is not affected, a message stating such will be displayed.

For questions about this service bulletin or assistance in returning an FNS pistol for a substitute striker, contact the FNS support team at 1-800-635-1321, extension 145, or by email at FNSservice@fnamerica.com. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

Here's why I asked....

About a month ago a member on a different forum was advertising several pistols for sale. This member just lost their spouse and is having financial difficulties and so because I was making more money than normal in my work and could help out I offered to buy the S&W M&P Shield.... and sent them the money. When I went to pick up the pistol last week at my FFL it was not the Shield but the FN... and this confused me. Seems the person messed up and sent me the wrong gun and in the mean time had sold the shield. They offered to send me all my money back and pay for the shipping of the FN back to them. The gun is still at my FFL's we did not do the transfer. I finally decided if the person was okay with it I'd just take the FN... I don't need either it or the Shield but am just trying to do what is best for my 'other forum friend'. There is another ironic part to this story but I'll hold off relaying it right now. I realize neither gun is a Sig, I'm just not really familiar with either.

Blume, I can only advise as to the Shield. I had a gen 1 and sold it in favor of a Shield 45. the Shield is terrific; never a problem; reliable clean or dirty and shoots anything!
My opinion is to wait for the next one. Many places are taking in gen1 shields as a trade for the gen2. One should show up with your name.
Nframe suggests the MP9c... another terrific compact 9mm as good as or better than the shield. I had one also and it was so much better than the HKp30sk both in accuracy and felt recoil and easy to carry to boot...(sorry HK fans but it is my true experienced-opinion).
I admire your commitment to a friend!

Based on a quick search at gun.deals, a Shield new is $250 and an FNS-9 new is $380, so if they take your offer that would be in your favor.

If you plan to resell, they're probably worth about the same. Shields are a dime a dozen, but not many are interested in the FNS.

arcwelder76: I fixed it.

Picked up the pistol today and just discovered something that makes me feel like a dufus.

These FN's aree made in Columbia S.C. at least that's where it was test fired.

ZSMICHAEL,
Maybe you or others can help me. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the slide off of this pistol. I've followed the instructions and there is no way to get the dern thing to 'unlock'. I swear the instructions that came with the pistol don't work. I've tried tripping the trigger in just about ever position there is... back front middle and the slide still won't come off

Pull back on the slide a little bit before pulling the trigger. So lock the slide back, drop the takedown lever, drop the slide release, pull back on the slide a little bit (make it flush or maybe a little behind flush with the frame), then pull the trigger, then push the slide forward. Definitely not as smooth/easy as other pistols.

I finally got it to come apart and need to practice on it I guess... just kind of frustrating that it has to be that complicated.... I'm used to something a little simpler... Sig P226 or even the p320.

I think I discovered the actual problem... the recoil spring and rod were not set exactly right,, there is a small grove the rear of the rod is supposed to sit in and it was just above this that was causing a catch when you tried to slide the rail off and actually kind of had to force it...

I had the same problem initially. Just takes a little practice. I like the FN, my gun is a 4OSW.

I like the feel and size of the gun, had no need for either as I said but was trying to help out a forum friend... don't know if I told the rest of the story or not... but two weeks after sending her the money I had a massive heart attack... 100% blockage and did major damage to my heart and will be out of work with little to no compensation for at least 3-4 months.... depending on a number of things coming up, I may be having to liquidate some of my investments. The only things I own are a one mans / single operator service business and a few guns.

I have 2 Shields and would not hesitate to recommend them or S%W's Customer Service and Lifetime Warranty.
My .45 Shield outshoots my 9MM compacts very reliably.
BUT I did fit both Shields, 9MM/.45 with Triji Night Sights/Apex Firing Systems and Hogue grip sleeves to meet my needs.
Out of the box, they are very good all by themselves.
