A friend retired and was disposing of some excess stuff. He had this revolver, and despite Taurus having a bad name, I bought it.

There is no model number on it, nor was there any box or paperwork. he said he bought it sometime in the '80s.

Looking online, I *think* it's a model 96, but kinda get the idea they are maybe 9-shot (also see reference to a model 94). I'd like to get a positive ID and what the S&W equivalent is. Thanks in advance.

It’s a 96 trying to copy a S&W 17. You got lucky that’s a good Taurus.

Thanks so much Smile Seems to shoot quite nicely. The S&W-is that a K-frame? I see several holsters for them, but not much of anything if I search "Taurus 96".

Correct! It is indeed a Model 96 "Target Scout", "equivalent" (Wink) to a S&W Model 17 K-Frame. Looks to be a later production model; likely late 1980s to mid-1990s. They are 6-shooters, not nine.
I've had one for over a decade and a half, and it's been a good shooter. The double action trigger pull isn't as good as my Smith & Wessons, but still not bad.
It's the one Taurus model that nobody seems to have had a problem with!
Good score!

I'll echo the above, great score! A buddy has one, and it's very nice. He says it shoots pretty well too. I'm a Taurus hater (I didn't set out to be one, but they made me that way), but I'd probably break my "no Taurus ever again rule" and scoop up a 96 if I came across one!

Thanks again, all. It was much easier to find a K-frame holster than something specifically stating for a Taurus 96. My friend and I looked online and saw an auction of one for $359.00, so we agreed on $350.

@excam_man Just looking at pictures or web pages mentioning either 94/96 with no capacity stated was what was confusing me. I saw a Hickock 45 video of him shooting a stainless 94 and it's a 9-shot. So I think it's safe to assume you're right.

I have a 96 and quality is quite good; they seemed to be from when Taurus was at the top of their copying game.
