New Steyr Pistols
My apologies if this has already been covered, but I was pretty surprised to hear that Steyr came out with a new line of pistols. Unsurprisingly, they are very similar to the P226, as Steyr is now owned by the same parent company that owns Arex in Slovenia (Arex makes a P226 clone).

I don’t know how closely related the Steyr pistol will be to the Arex in terms of manufacturing (i.e. where things will be made), but it’s no doubt interesting to see a “new” pistol design that has a metal frame, a DA/SA action, and a high bore axis. They really do look very nice IMO and have some cool features. However, I’ll definitely miss the previous (and thoroughly underrated) line of Steyr pistols.

Arex makes some nice guns that punch above their weight-class, but whoever is in charge of naming their guns needs to be fired. Their model naming schemes are confusing & awful.

I know this isn’t a popular statement but I hope they make them in another caliber besides 9mm. I’d like to try one but my money doesn’t go towards 9mm.

The big question is are we going to get them in the US? The main reason I've heard for this expansion is for European shooters to get something close to the Mastershop pistols that Sig stopped producing.

Also assuming no tariffs, prices seem to start at $1K and goes up. The comp barrel one l'm interested in, but I'm not sure if these guns take P226 mags. If they don't, I'm out.

Edit: Here's Forgotten Weapons about this. Also, this gun has proprietary mags because it has one of those stupid ambi mag releases on both sides where if you press in on one side, the other side also moves. At that point, just give me the H&K mag release.

They don't, and I too am out. I've said before, and I'll repeat. Arex should have designed their hammer guns - Zero-1, Zero-2, and new AT series - around P226, Beretta 92, or CZ 75 mags. Theirs are struggling platforms, so some commonality w/ existing popular guns would go a long way in getting new buyers on board.

Their Delta series striker gun did it right by making it compatible w/ CZ P-10 series mags.

Sometimes you have to wonder, why do their brains operate in such unconventional way. Same thing with Beretta and their Cougar decades ago.

For some reason, Arex insisted on the Walther P88 style of ambidextrous mag release (button pressed from both sides) for both of their platforms, which calls for a different notch type and location when compared to a P226. If they hadn’t done so, they could have easily used P226 mags. They’re not the only ones to use this weird design though. HK did it with the CC9, Zastava with the CZ99, HS Produkt (Springfield Armory) with the XD, and I’m sure others too.

I never understood the appeal, as it normally leads to a mushy or inconsistent feel while operating the mag release. The XD is probably the worst offender, even though I think the pistol itself is great overall.

I think CZ did it with the original P10’s as well. I seem to recall buying an aftermarket single sided mag release because it was exactly as bad as described above in its original format.

Gun designers can be morons at time. Cue not making the Beretta Cougar (great gun) use the ever present 92 mags. So stupid.

So are they discontinuing the MF pistol?
Steyr really likes to release pistols with zero support.

As far as I’m aware, the MF has indeed been discontinued. I read somewhere that Steyr confirmed this via Instagram, but I haven’t been able to find anything on any of the accounts they run.

That is a shame if they did discontinued the MF. But then again, Steyr never really marketed that pistol hard and in the world of a billion polymer pistol, it got lost pretty easy.

Interesting. I wonder if either the Zastava or HS Produkt mags would work in the AREX. Either would be relatively common and affordable here in the U.S.
