On what gun? I think people will need more details to answer your question.

The newer style has a raised plastic ledge that runs around the perimeter of the exposed slide stop/release.

this is an extra module so I will be stuck with the old style. Do I need to change anything if I want to put a newer FCU in it?

If the FCU has the new style (small) slide lock/release, it will work just fine in an old gen 1 grip.
