For the most part are the P226 .40 mags the same profile as the p229 other than capacity and therefore length?

P226 magazine tubes are narrower than 357/40 P229 mag tubes. A 357/40 P229 magazine will not fit into a P226 mag well.

I have a friend who does great leather work. He's making a mag pouch for my BIL's p226. Should p229 magazine be used to mock up, would it make that much of a difference?

I'd recommend using the correct mag to insure correct fit.

I agree. If the pouch is made to be a snug, secure fit for P226 magazines, a P229 mag will be a very tight fit. Ask me how I know. Wink
