Your P226 in .40 will be fine as a backup. Just pick the right bullet and it will do the job if you need it to. I carried a Glock 23 as a backup hog hunting.

I don't know much about hogs. But, we have black bear, timber wolves, and a few "big cats". When I go into the woods, which is almost everyday or at least the weekend. My favorite pistol is a three inch SP101. It is light and has power. Sure, only five rounds, but I am good with it. To me, if it gets dirty, it will still go bang every time!
