Got bit for the first time today.

SchmelbyGot bit for the first time today.
I have a Kimber and Rock Island 1911, couple thousand rounds, no problem.
Bought my son a Colt series 70 for his birthday, went to the range today, fired a magazine,
went back to my bag to get another mag and saw all these red spots on the floor, then I looked at my hand!!
I apologized profusely to the range man and cleaned up my own blood. It got me good, now I'm afraid to shoot it again.
And I've always wanted a Colt for myself, maybe a Gold Cup?

LoswsmithI mean, is it slide bite at the thumb web or riding the high thumb too close to the slide or a sharp sight slice doing overhand racking or bad grip to frame fitment or something else? Inquiring minds gots to know!!

SchmelbyYeah, the slide got me, web of the thumb.
I don't know how many semi autos I've fired over 45 years, but that's the first time that's happened to me.
I didn't even feel it!

SchmelbyAs a side question, the mags from my Kimber, RIA, and Mec-Gar wouldn't fit in his Colt. No big deal, I told him he will just have to buy Colt mags. I thought they would be interchangeable.

They should be if they're standard 1911 pattern and the same caliber. Are you saying they wouldn't insert into the gripframe at all? Something's wrong with his gun in that case IMO.
If they insert fine but don't lock in, there may be dimensionall differences either at the front/bottom of the grip where it's notched for the mag baseplate, or at the magazine catch, or both. A gunsmith (or careful measuring and filing by you) should be able to sort it. I'm very surprised that a Colt is (might be) out of spec that badly. My Colts take all mags I have no issues. I had to fit an RIA slightly so it would take all my mags.

dsietsMy brother has been collecting older firearms the last several years.
I'd never experienced slide or hammer bite to the web of my hand until this year, his WWII era 1911 helped me out w/ the slide bite and his High Power gave me a taste of hammer bite.
Nothing major.
Educational after reading about such things in the gun rags for 40 yrs.

All three mags would stop about an inch from being fully seated. I gently pushed but no go. I wasn't going to use the palm of my hand to slam it in to a brand new pistol. This is why I rarely post in the pistol and rifle sections. I'm not an expert on anything.
I'll buy him a dozen Colt mags. Of the fifty or so guns I have , they are almost all stock the way I bought them. I have fun plinking.

Ah, I understand. IMO it's just the friction of a new/stiff mag catch spring against the magazines and a firm tap on the bottom of the mag would most likely seat them and they'd function fine. But I understand your reluctance to force anything, and you were there and I wasn't, and you likely made the correct call.
If you happen to try again, you might try pushing in on the mag catch button a little while inserting those mags and see if it sorts the issue. Hope the Colt mags fit and function. FYI there are a lot of counterfeit Colt-marked mags out there so make sure you buy from a reputable seller.

patwI had the same issue when I fired a Glock the first time from the slide. Years later I got a standard Springfield 1911 and got hammer bite. I always have to add a beavertail of some sort to certain guns in order to not bleed in places.

Thank you 1K, I didn't think about pushing the mag catch button. When new, we field stripped to lube and the slide pin was extremely
tight very tight. kept squirting with oil and it finally came out. We will clean it real good.
Another question, is it better to put a dab of grease on the the rails or just CMP?

newtoSig765Maybe not much help, but I used Colt 1911 magazines in my Kimber Pro Carry almost exclusively with no problems. I suspect it's an issue with the mag release on the Colt, but never heard of that happening before.

92fstechGI 1911s are evil. The old Remington Rand I was issued would hammer bite me every time. JMB definitely hadn't heard of a high thumbs-forward grip when he designed that thing at the beginning of the last century. I know it's a departure from the original design, but all of my pesonal 1911s have beavertails.

egregoreI have not experienced slide or hammer bite, but have gotten:
1 - Gouging of thumb/trigger finger web by poor grip safety/frame fitting with sharp edges and gaps (to my shame, Para-Ord P-12, total POS)
2 - Gouging/abrasion of same area by standard-configuration grip safety (Colt Combat Commander, mfg. c. 1990)
3 - Gouging/blistering of trigger finger by trigger (Ruger SP-101 with magnum loads)
4 - Gouging/blistering/skin shredding (actually left a flap of skin hanging) of trigger finger by trigger (CZ P-01 with original trigger)
I don't put up with that for long. Respectively, they got sold, sold, shot with .38 Spl. only, new trigger.
