Greetings SIG Forum - I want to continue the prevailing trend by asking a non-SIG question . An LGS has a like-new 5.7 for $899. It looks like new but I suspect there must be a catch. Are these things reliable? I understand it's going to be lewd as hell at the range. I like the idea of 20-rd mags. If I get it - it'll be the most I've ever payed for any firearm & would hate to get something that doesn't run well. Understand it's not at all practical but it's very different from anything I've ever owned ... Feel free to tell me it's a stupid idea and waist of money!!

The 5.7 was practical enough for some malcontent at Fort Hood to take out a lot of people.

I have both the 5.7 pistol and PS90. They are both very enjoyable to shoot and very reliable.

$899 is a pretty good price for the pistol. Often they go for over $1k used. Wholesale price is just under $1100 on these.

I buy my ammo by the case when it's on sale and it brings the cost down to under $20 for a box of 50 rounds (1 mag in the PS90).

At that price it would be at my house.
Fun gun for sure. Overly practical, not so much but I have plenty that are practical.

Federal plinking ammo can be had for about $16 a box.

For price alone, it is a good deal. But I would only buy one if I had the rifle to match.

If you like to collect oddities - which I have no problem with, I have bought a couple of guns for their unusual design myself - that price is as good as you're going to find, even used.

It's a very good price. I passed on a barely used one several years ago at $850; I told myself I didn't need or want it and as before it continues to feel plasticky in a not-so-great kind of way (to this day I still think like that every time we get one in from FNH). But it's funny how I still kick myself over not buying that used one. The guy next to me bought it almost as soon as I said no thanks. That's how it goes sometimes.

Thanks for the input Gents - I've almost got it funded. Had a Ruger Vaquero on consignment and it sold - then a kind Gent took my P250 Conv Kit a couple of days ago. Just need another $300 and can't bear to put anything else up for sale!!

One more question though - for those who've either handled and fired one - any worries about OOB firing with one of these? I keep seeing horror stories about other pistols either firing OOB or almost ... and I think the 5.7 is a pretty high pressure round.

It’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot. The best part is the muzzle flash will double as a flame thrower in CQB.

I don’t know about the OOB likelihood. I have only shot one a couple of times.

Kentucky Gun Company has the Earth tone model on sale for a little over a Grand.

I enjoy mine. Very reliable, limited recoil, powerful gun. Do not shoot steel at close range with this gun. Easy to clean due to the design of the gun. Ammo has gotten much cheaper last few years. Yeah it was worth it for me.

Oh I also got a loader for the gun, makes the process of loading the magazine much quicker and easier. Found the loader on Amazon.

I got to shoot a friends some. You might hit things with it like any other side arm but its not a varmint rifle. He leaves his brass on the ground after the 3rd fireing. He reloads the little rocket. I can think of pistols I'd rather have for 9 hundred.

Great pistol. I love shooting it but the ammo is expensive so I passed on buying one.

I have wanted one since they were first presented to the civvy market. At $899.00, I don't think you can go wrong. If you decide you don't like it, you can always sell it and make your money back. I have no use for it and serves no real purpose for me but I still want one.

Fun to shoot at the range. I've never had a failure to feed, jam or failure to fire. For personal protection, has the advantages of minimal recoil, easy slide to work, capacity. Manual of arms requires practice (safety above trigger finger).

I haven't heard of functional problems.
The ammo is pricey with limited availability and most people consider them too large for concealed carry.
If you won't use it as a carry gun and the ammo is too expensive to shoot it much for fun, it becomes a safe Queen.

To the OP, I've seen that gun you are talking about - the LGS sales people were trying to sell it to me yesterday, although I don't think I am interested.

However, I did find out that it has no front sight - that funky red dot mount that is on the gun is apparently not meant for that pistol. The LGS guys were saying that it is pretty flimsy and were advocating taking it off, but if you do, you will have to get a sight installed, so count that in on the price...

Thanks again, Gents, for all of your input. In the end, I just couldn't come up with $899 + tax without hitting my C/C. Plus, noted above, there seems to be at least one issue with it. I stopped at Virginia Arms in Manassas and they had an absolutely pristine P229C in 9mm. It's the cleanest US-made SIG I have handled. The photo is crummy and does not do it justice - I'm trying to resurrect a 10+ year old Fuji camera and I'm not liking what I'm seeing!

I'm guessing the SIG connoisseurs will turn up their noses at this pistol ... since it's "just" a P224 slide mated to a P229 frame. But, lots to like here. SRT, looks like G10 grips, flawless finish and easier for me to get a hold of with the SRT and thin grips. Also, and this is a small thing, I noticed that SIG machined some recesses into the magwell - and the recesses have a small steel insert to help prevent stripping the grip screws. Hadn't seen that before and it's a nice touch - but it's nigh on impossible for me to show with my old camera.

I have added a 5.7 to my want list - but I just can't get there until next tax year ...
