Impulse bought a .357 SIG P229 today.

It was so cheap I couldn't say no. Something was clearly wrong with it and having done enough "parts bag" reassemblies on classic P series guns, I felt confident I could fix it. Gun would work correctly in DA mode, but SA either wouldn't catch, or would catch and hold, but throw the decocker all the way down and then randomly drop.

I just pulled it down to the frame, and sure enough, there's your problem right there!

So now I just need to source a cheap replacement and I'm off and running on another 1997 era P229. I think I also still have a set of original factory grips I pulled off one of mine when I bought a set of G10's about a decade or so ago. Need a grip screw also. Not sure what the hell I'm gonna do with a .357 SIG, and I sure don't wanna feed it, but again, it was so cheap I couldn't say no to it. That thread about the Revenant frames has me looking and thinking silly thoughts. I have the ultrasonic heating up and then it's all getting the spa treatment. Looks like an LEO trade-in that was properly greased with TW25B before making it out onto the hillbilly market. I'd bet it hasn't been cleaned in near a decade, based on the crud and rust.

Anyone know somewhere cheaper than Midwest for a $33 hammer before I move forward on it?

I bought one about like that several years ago from a forum member, came with both barrels, is functionally perfect but with a similarly rough finish. Non-railed.

I need to get it to the range again, since I carry it occasionally.

Congrats on the find. Honestly, if I could find another in better condition, I'd buy it in a hot second!

By the way, Greg Cote has 14-rd mags for about $30. Every time I think about getting some, though, I end up with an unexpected expense and say, "Well, later".

That's the same model and caliber I carried on duty for years, and even after retirement I still rotate it with my P320 and P365 depending on weather and wardrobe. Nice catch---hope the replacement part does the trick.

I had a similar vintage 229 40 that I bought an extra barrel for. Remember when you could get any classic P series from cdnn for less than $500? Better times gents..

Also looks like a failed mim part, dang.

For the life of me I can't remember where I bought it online, but it showed out of stock but available for backorder. Picked up 1k rounds of Speer Lawman for $18 a box shipped. This was late 2024, but there are still some decent prices for 357sig out there.

There is a used one on eBay for $22.

Used Sig P series hammer

I just performed a DAO to DA/SA swap on a P226 with a Matrix parts kit, and I was pleased with the result.
As nontypical suggested.

I'm not going to take after pics until I get it all back together, but everything except the slide and frame came out looking brand new. The most egregious thing on the frame is the docking lever wear, but otherwise, looks great. The Nitron on the slide is fairly worn through in a lot of spots and the finish looks uneven. I'm considering using this as an excuse to go ahead and pick up a cheapo blasting cabinet and do the old classic mod of glass bead blasting the slide on this one. The ones I remember seeing from the early 2010's guys here did looked pretty slick.

I do. Pricing out parts including barrels over the last day or so has been rather surprising.

You know, I've been thinking the exact same thing. It has that powdered metal look to it. I feel like I've read here that the MIM parts from the late 90's and early 2000's were fine, but that things have actually improved. No telling, but it still doesn't give me the warm fuzzies overall.

Thanks, I snagged it. Best price I've seen for one, shipped. I need to remember to start checking eBay again for small gun parts. That's the Model 11 I bought a few months ago, and now this P229 where I needed something and the price for one on eBay was half of what Numrich wanted.

What all is involved in converting one of these to 9mm? I forget. Barrel and locking block, right? I know there's conversion barrels, but hell if I'm going to pay $300ish for one. Roll Eyes

Nice. I love the 357 Sig round and the P229 is a hell of a gun. Nicely done!!

It is hard to go wrong with a P229 in any caliber or configuration in my humble opinion! Biggest issue with them is they multiply! Smile Good luck with your re-build project.

I got one from CDNN for $392 about 20 yrs ago, sent it to Robar for NP3 and, well, I really wish I hadn't sold that one.

Nice grab. I sold my 1994 229 in .357sig a couple years back and it's one of those I kinda wish I had back.

The 229 in .357sig is just "right" in the .357sig world. I didn't like it in Glocks and other manufacturers for some reason, nearly as much as I did in the P series Sigs.

I ran across a 229 DAO or DAK in 357 kind of on the fence. Like the idea of DAO. What was the $$ if you don't mind me asking. LGS is asking 600 little holster wear.

Shooting .357 Sig puts a big smile on my face. Muzzle flash is mighty impressive.

The big question is not should I buy a 357 Sig. The big question is "where do I buy enough ammo these days?"

Yeah, as much as I don’t love .40, I still have a lot of it. I need to do an inventory and see exactly, but it’s at least several cases of the old Border Patrol contract stuff. It may be worth it to find a .40 barrel. I forgot about the chamber hood dimension thing when I asked about converting it to a 9mm, so a conversion barrel would be necessary. I dunno, we’ll see.

Greg, that’s probably a fair price on that one. I paid “gunsmith special” price for this one, so it wouldn’t be representative of the market in any way. I could buy new grips, sights, and a barrel and still be into it for less than your gun store is asking for that one.

I have a P229C SAS in .40 and it's a fantastic shooter. I'd grab a P224 barrel in .357SIG if a deal on one came along. But I'm very happy with .40.

My first I thought it was new, found out it was a VASP. Guess when they went to P320's he kept it.
Unfortunately gun shop has a layaway plan, so not a big hit LOL
Thanks

I have had a P229 for the past 25 to 30ish years. Thousands of rounds through it and it still works perfectly. Pull the trigger, at it goes bang, every time, great gun.

I have a couple P229s (no rail) in 357/40. One is DA/SA, the other is DAK.I have a significant quantity of 357/40 put up. My dept. issued 357, son's issued .40. Both are issuing 9mm now so they had to find a home for the leftover ammo...
