I recently purchased a P226X5-Classic which is a joy to shoot with one issue. The extended mag release. I've tried different grip positions however, occasionally I will inadvertently trip the mag release. Is there a shorter version available or am I forced to "shorten" this one. Sig says they don't have a shorter one for this gun.

P229-1 mag release might work.

Any standard length P226 magazine release should fit. It is possible to swap them yourself. However, doing the install incorrectly can potentially fracture a piece out of the frame. (it's actually pounding the incorrectly installed magazine release out that breaks a chunk out of the frame) The secret weapon for removing the incorrectly installed magazine release is a small piece of thin feeler gauge. Is it the new X-Five Classic from SIG NH or one of the older German ones? If it’s the new US-made one, the STAS version is the one with the extended release. The Classic version already has the standard release (it can’t go any shorter). This would explain why SIG told you that they don’t have a shorter one. If it’s an older German-made one (most of which have an extended release that is even longer than the one on the US-made STAS) then the part that cee_Kamp linked is what you want. It is the new US version. I just ordered a new mag release from Sig which I will shorten and add checkering then replace the extended one. Hopefully Thanks for the replies gents.

^^^^ I replaced the extended mag release of my P226 X5 Competition with an ordinary P226 mag release. Perfect fit and function. Much easier than those machining operations. Serious about crackers

The new X Five has a mag release that is held in place similar to the P320 and P365, and also the P229-1 (at least the SAO version), and I think the P227. It does not have the plate on the opposite side like the P226 and P220. I have an X Five STAS and the mag release is long, but that helps make it so I can hit it with my strong hand thumb without shifting my grip.

It appears SIG is transitioning to the new style magazine release on many models. (without the sheet metal plate on the opposite side from the release) Some of their models on the SIG website don't have a photo of the right hand side. P229 models on the SIG website showed both magazine release designs. The pictured P229 Compact M11-A1 on the SIG website right hand side photo clearly shows the old design. While the new X5 models show the new magazine release design. It's also possible the photos taken for the website do not match up with current production reality. The part I linked above likely will not fit your new production X5. @rtibbetts: It seems what you are doing is the only possible choice. (shortening the replacement OEM part) At least until the aftermarket starts supplying what customers want. I question whether the new design is a case of a "better" magazine release, or a case of reduced manufacturing costs with fewer CNC machining operations. sigh... Yet another reason NOT to purchase a newly manufactured SIG pistol. Several other comments: Make sure you don't shorten the new magazine release excessively and make it unusable. Go slowly. As far as checkering, it may be a through hardened MIM part and files will "skate" on the part like you were trying to file a piece of broken glass. If so, checkering with a file will be out of the question. You might be able to do a checkerboard pattern with a thin abrasive cut-off wheel and a Dremel, IF you have a steady hand.
