P220 trigger bar spring won't stay in place. Login/Join

This is a W. German P220 and I went to install the SRT kit last night. Everything felt find when I cycled it with the grips off. Put the grips back on and, while it still fires in SA and DA mode, the trigger needs a shove to get all the way forward again. And after a few tries, it goes limp. I took the slide and right grip off and cycled it a bunch more in SA and DA, worked fine. As soon as the slide goes back on, the trigger binds after resetting and won't go all the way forward without an assist. And when I assist it, the trigger bar spring always falls out of the rear notch. I'm sure I did not bend that spring and this gun hasn't been shot enough for it to be worn out. Sort of feels like that trigger bar piece that sticks up on the rail is a fraction of an inch out of place when the slide is over it.

But wait, there's more.

When I insert a mag, it works fine and I can dry fire it all day in SA and DA. Not that I need to be able to dry fire this gun with no mag in it, but I'd like it to be working perfectly all the time. How to fix?

This may or may not help. It wasn't with the SRT kit - which didn't exist in the 90s - but the binding trigger sounds familiar. Where are you putting the front end of the trigger bar spring? If the factory trigger bar, it has a little hole in it and a notch on the underside at the very front. The spring end doesn't go in the hole, but the notch. I have no explanation for the magazine.

Is this the new style spring with older unmodified grips?

Just my 2 cents, but I would get a new trigger bar spring,(or a few of them to have on hand) and then reassemble the gun. I had a similar problem with a p226 and the "looped" trigger bar spring. If it is the original spring, it might have been bent easier than you think.

There is an older thread here on this forum that can offer some help.
Search " P220 trigger reset issue ". I am bad at hotlinking,sorry.

Consider Stoics question.
There are two trigger bar spring styles and they are not compatible with all grips. If you are are using a new spring style with old grips you may have issues. Likewise the old spring style will not work with newer grips.

The P220 only has and has ever had one style of trigger bar spring which is the straight style spring.
For other models like the P226 yours and Stoics statement applies, the old style straight spring was upgraded to the coiled style. The older grips as you mention will not allow for the use of the coiled spring without binding.

OP if you have a coiled spring on your P220 its not correct. The P220 & P225 use the same trigger bar spring and is a different spring then the old style P226 spring.

If I’m not mistaken, the P220 has had the same trigger bar spring its whole life. The double-stack models (P226, P228, P229) are the ones that switched from the bent style to the looped style.

Ok, I got around to wrenching on this gun again, as I always go to the range and the gym during the Super Bowl, since both are empty then. I got some new springs and threw one in today. Seems to work perfectly now with or without mag inserted, with or without right grip panel on. Here are the old and new springs, new one on top. I think I'll put the old one into a baggie, mark it as old and maybe try to re-tension it and try in one of my project P220s in the future. But I will run some rounds through this gun in a few hours.
