I didn't think to first pose this question to SigForum before buying a 1,000 rounds of Federal Training + Protection. But I suppose this is for next time.

Me too. I also like the Critical Duty 135gr +p cartridge.

Federal HST or Gold Dots in 124gr +P use to be my preferred flavor but they seem unobtainable. I’ve been stocking up on Critical Duty 135gr +P as a result.

For years I carried off duty, what I carried on duty which was the Winchester 147grain Ranger.

I also had/have a large number of the original Federal Hydro shocks in 124 and 135 grain. I received a small trash can full from a friend who worked for a defense contractor.

For some reason over the years I started buying the Federal Classic HI shok in 115 grain. No idea why but I started using it both in my 9's and 40's.

Last year I bought a few boxes of Winchester Silvertip in 147grain from a forum member to try. No real reason just on a whim.

Depends on the gun. Short barrel vs full size pistol. Full size, give me 124 gr HST, short barrel I'm liking Sig V Crown 365.

Federal 124gr HST. It's what I'd buy even if I wasn't issued it.

I had issues with HSTs and Hornady in .40 doing some backyard, totally unscientific, ballistics. Speer Gold Dots worked fine. So it’s Gold Dots for everything for me.

Gold Dots for me too. Proven performer. I have also been happy to use Federal 9BP, which is (used to be, anyway) available cheap.

When purchasing ammunition to be used for my defense and the defense of my family, price is not one of the factors that I consider

I will not balance Price against Effectiveness

How much of this ammunition do we really go through after we are comfortable about functioning

Even if it is a few hundred rounds each year at our current China Virus Crisis inflated prices, So What?

You only have one family. Buy whatever you are most comfortable with

That said, Ranger SXT, God Dots and V-crown are all among what is carried in my pistols depending on the caliber

I guess I can’t argue with you; you make a lot of sense. I guess what I had in mind was that I don’t want to pay for hype and not actual effectiveness. I haven’t looked at the complete price range but I imagine defensive ammo is like any product where some are low cost, then you have the middle of the pack that does the job then there’s the Gucci level where you’re paying a premium for intangibles. I want the best choices from the middle of the pack.

Speer Gold Dot in everything I carry.
180 grain in my duty 40. Yes, we still carry 40’s.
147 grain in 9mm
230 grain in 45 ACP
95 grain in 380 Auto
The last ballistics workshop I attended I wasn’t too impressed w/ the Hornady Critical Defense and it’s expansion. Now, their sniper ammo nice.

115 or 124 gr FMJ. I insist on 100% functioning above all else.

FMJ also has the advantage of superior penetration.

I have several types/brands of 9mm defensive ammo for my Sig's. I'm just going to list what I shoot out of my 9mm Sig's and not my other 9mm's.

My P365XL's are fed Federal 124gr +P HST's.
My P365's(standard) are fed Hornady 115gr XTPs
My P320's are fed Federal 9BPLE 115gr +P+'s

I also have some Remington 115gr HPs and some Winchester Silvertip HPs on hand.

Ill spend the extra $ for effectiveness!

Winchester Ranger or Speer Gold Dot 2 in 124Gr +P for my duty and off duty guns. Winchester Rangers 220Gr in my G-21 and one of the 1911's in the safe.

I think I still have 2 magazines of Black Talons in my BHP in the safe.

Plinking, hitting steel, paper... I'll shoot almost anything reliable. Federal, Winchester, Remington, Blazer... 115, 124, 147 gr.

124 gr hst or gold dot for carry defense. Plus p or not 50fps difference

124 gr nato because it’s power and bullet weigh are similar to the other rounds.
